391843 2005-09-29 00:13:00 Remember those horrible reports of the breakdown of law and order - nay, society and humanity itself - in New Orleans? All those looters running amok killing, raping, destroying? Many a people, including me, shook their heads in dismay at this display of beastliness.

Well, those reporters, journalists, bullsh*tters have been caught out. The NZHerald reports (www.nzherald.co.nz) that most of the lurid reporting was bunk. Remember the murderous conditions in that stadium? Only 6 people died there - 4 of natural causes, 1 of a drug overdose, and the other from suicide.

391844 2005-09-29 00:25:00 That doesnt suprise me. Anything to make people feel sorry, make a quick buck, and earn readers/viewers. bob_doe_nz (92)
391845 2005-09-29 10:41:00 So all of this angst, the headshaking and bewilderment of thousands of people around the world - was pointless? In vain? All because the journalists were trying to beat the story up?

I'm appalled. Speechless. So there never was anarchy - apart from what seems to be normal for American cities. What a crock.

Mind you, the truth didn't seem to come through on the net either.

391846 2005-09-29 11:41:00 So how do we know this latest story isn't also spin? A bit of damage control to bring the tourists back to New Orleans? Who knows what to believe? andrew93 (249)
391847 2005-09-29 12:58:00 The retractions of the original reports are starting to appear in the US papers. I have seen it in the LAtimes.com, WashingtonPost.com and NYTimes.com.

People did die and suffer, but not in the horresndous numbers and not the breakdown of civil order as was reported.

You know how it is - you gotta pull the viewers and the readers, so in the absence of on-the-ground, truthful reports the news media either made them up or just accepted exaggerated, erroneous and fanciful reports.

391848 2005-09-29 14:53:00 I too got swept up in the yellow journalism that reported these horrors .

We (in the US) laugh at things like the London Daily Mirror and it's scam journalism, never thinking we are getting sensationalism here too . We have our tabloids at the check-out stand at our supermarkets, but the broadsheets are not SUPPOSED to be that kind of journalism .

My bad in transferring that "news" on to you guys too . I should have suspected what now has become a clearer insight to the true mission of the US news agencies . . too . . . as it turns out . . . slandering in the name of an estate's rights to report, but really to slander and malign, the opposite party .

Like a train wreck in slow motion, I too was swept into the swell of scenes of humanity as much worse that I could even imagine because of this slanted and biased party-bashing .

I apologize for my passing on the unsubstantiated articles as they became available to me, on to NZ F1'ers . I shall view all press releases with the jaundiced eye I should have used last time .

Again, I am sorry for the US news agencies slink to the bottom-feeder frenzy that they now exhibit in public as "right-to-know" reporting .

The olde saw of "Trust none of what you hear, 1/2 of what you see" seems to fit .

P/S . . . . . . . . . however, if someone says something nasty about Mr . Bill . . . count on me to instantly (if not sooner) pass it on to F1 .

391849 2005-09-29 23:05:00 So what was with all the reports from people who were caught up in it?

People in the stadium, the people trapped next door who were hiding in the dark and could hear shots being fired. Heck I saw TV footage of cops getting shot at, and looters running amuck.....

Sounds like damage control to me, Hell when we had the Motua Gardens occupation here the crime skyrocketed, a baby died, and at least 3 women were raped, and that was an ocupation of just a few days by a few hundred people...in Fine weather with plenty of food...

Not to mention the assults going on left right and centre, The rocks thrown at cars etc etc etc.

391850 2005-09-30 05:19:00 You said something there MET, and I partially agree . . there is a lot of spin . . . pro and counter and this MAY just be an anomoly of that damage control you mentioned .

However, there were also reports that with all the shootings, rapings and thievery, it was just a normal, or even sub-normal deviation for crime on the law enforcement charts . Facts as they are reported NOW indicate that the crime rate actually dropped quite a bit whilst the "people" were trapped in the dome .

Makes one wonder how criminal the whole area is on a normal day .

Maybe to remove the stigma of a crime-ridden city, they should make everybody spend some time in the dome . . . just to keep the normal deviation of crime rate to a minimum .
