Now that we have three identical Nokia phones courtesy of the Swapya program, we need to buy different coloured faceplates for two of them so that we know which is which.

So, where does a Jafa go to buy these? Do the Telecom shops have them? Any ideas on an economic source for spare batterries (and cost!) would be appreciated as well.

Cheers

391420 2005-09-27 22:34:00 For faceplates you can try trademe, as for batterries telecom shops should have them. Nokia 2280 battery is BL-5C model, used for many other phones.(Nokia 1100 1108 2112 2280 2300 2600 3100 3105 3120 3125 3650 3660 6108 6230 6600 6630 6670 6820 7600 7610) STi (8857)
391421 2005-09-28 00:36:00 Thanks for that. I don't want to get tied up with Trade Me though, I'd prefer to go to a shop.

I picked up one half an hour ago at the $2 shop at the local Mall and quickly found out why it is only $2. The keypad is pretty rough and it lacks the earpiece extender that channels the sound to the earholes. It may not matter to kids, but with reduced hearing in that ear I would have problems hearing in a noisy environment.

Found some genuine Nokia versions for $29.95 in the same Mall at the Warehouse (kiddie pix on them) but they are not suitable for business use. Maybe the Telecom shops have them.

391422 2005-09-28 00:41:00 yes you can get them at the telecom shop but they will be pretty expensive for what they are....

i was going to suggest trademe as they have alot of them but i see that you dont want to go through them...

why not just use the orginal keypad with a $2 shop face plate.

i noticed harvey norman had them for sale the other day around $5 i think, but dont quote me on this.....

391423 2005-09-28 00:55:00 There is a REALLY reputable guy on Trademe who sells cellphone batteries (refurbsihed I believe, with 6 month warranty, and they are really good), for $18 buynow. He has 100% positive feedback for over 300 and free shipping.

There's not really any risk there. But if you want brand new ones...

Thanks George, but I'm not sure that I would want a "refurbished" battery . I assume that they will be lithium-ion cells, and there is no technology for true "refurbishing" that I am aware of, though it is possible to "freshen up" used batteries or to reactivate cells that have died from over-discharge .

My bet is that he buys up batteries removed from phones that are being refurbished or recycled and sells the ones that still show good life .

Refurbishing, a cost-effective exercise

In an effort to salvage returned batteries, some mobile phone manufacturers segregate battery packs according to purchase date . Packs returned within the thirty-day warranty period are marked type 'B' . The batteries are then consolidated and sent to a regional service center where they are serviced . Batteries that are clean, (have no coffee residue) and regain a capacity of 80% or higher, are relabeled and sold at a discount price . The refurbishing program reclaims over 90% of the returned batteries .

On the strength of the success, some battery-refurbishing houses have extended the service to include batteries that are up to one year old . Repairing these older packs yields a 40-70% restoration rate . Managers have indicated that effectively run battery refurbishing centers manage to generate a profit . Equally importantly is the environmental benefit in restoring rather than disposing of a battery .

391426 2005-09-28 07:27:00 Hello Billy

I have a couple of extra Nokia 2280 faceplates lying around the garage, mostly in brand new condition. I’m willing to part them for free as part of my spring cleaning routine. PM me if you need any. Cheers.

Thanks KP, but re my previous post, my wife subsequently went out and bought a $29 . 95 Warehouse job that turned out to be far worse than the $2 Shop version . The faceplate window had to be assembled and glued in place, then it turned out that the moulding for the back cover was crook and only one side would fit!! Every back cover out of that mould will be the same I guess .

So, the $2 Shop job turned out to be much better than I thought! A little work with some suitable plastic sponge with a hole through the middle bridged the gap between the speaker and the earpiece and away we went .

Now for the hands-free kit for the car!

Seems I may have been right about the shrinking coverage for 025 as well . On 027 I get good signal in my downstairs office (with foil-backed gib wall linings) whereas 025 was dead and I had to go to the top of my driveway to get enough signal to use the phone . Not that I needed to do that of course, I was just proving a point to myself .

Cheers
