391194 2005-09-27 02:38:00 Author stands by controversial health book

26/09/2005 13:39:13

The co-author of a widely-condemned book on Maori health is standing by his call for Maori to smoke, gamble and eat fatty foods if they so choose.

'Maori Health' was published by the Kotahitanga Community Trust, one of South Auckland's largest Maori health providers.

It claims the health system is racist and opposes activities Maori enjoy. It says Maori can smoke, gamble, fight and eat fatty foods if they want to.

The book also describes Maori health workers who say otherwise as brainwashed "house niggers" and "health Nazis".

Co-author Peter Caccioppoli says the book's purpose is to inform Maori there are other options to what the Health Ministry preaches. He says the idea is to encourage Maori to make their own choices, and admits that includes even ignorant decisions.

He says Maori shouldn't be made to feel bad about things they enjoy.

He is now planning a book on Maori in the education system.Link (www.newstalkzb.co.nz)

So the Health Ministry should not be advising how people should live their lives, even though the costs of their lifestyle choice costs the ministry in surgery and other specialist work to keep them alive. If they choose to ignore the advice they should also not seek help from the Ministry when they get sick. That would be a fair call, don't you think.

Coward :)

Well, I'll jump in.

We have seen lots of postings, generally from the 'right', in the 'who are you going to vote for' thread calling for an end to the nanny state, and letting people live how they choose without being told how to by the government of the day. So logically all those people should be supporting this book.

I support it for a different reason; overpopulation. Most of the worlds problems are caused by overpopulation, so anything that helps to reduce it, smoking, obesity, suicide, homosexuality, lesbianism, a war or two here and there, I'd go along with

391198 2005-09-27 03:55:00 Hmmm.....they still want a nanny state, they want to ruin their health and then get a special "poly" pill to keep them alive.

Personally Im all for it apart from the medical care, What anybody of any shade does is entirely their bizzo, Let em eat cake if its cake they want.

So, lets get into the meat of the matter and pull all that race orintated medical care, can't have your cake and eat it to.....I wonder if they will call any dark skinned medical workers "house ni**ers" when they are saving their life.....

391199 2005-09-27 04:01:00 My problem with this is here, its a "Community Trust" set up for Maori Health and it is supporting "Bad" habits. The Ministry is not telling people what they should do, they are advising what they should do. They need to improve primary care, which I support, and this includes, prevention of disease in the first place. Improve primary care, you reduce hospital visits and thereby can use the resources on other much needed operations.

BTW: I am neither Right nor Left and really consider myself a moderate.

391200 2005-09-27 04:11:00 Sure eat drink and be merry . . . . but why should my tax dollars be used to pay for your hospital bills?

Why should we have ethnic focused health programs that try to show people the danger of diabeties, weight problems, and other health related illnesses and not be brave enough to say "Wise up fatties, you are killing yourselves, work it out for yourself or pay for it yourself" .

How about calling a spade a spade and saying that the reason maori men have a lifespan 10 years less than pakeha is because of their diet?

Did anyone see the politics program with the guys in the rubber faces recently? I saw a short of it as an advert . In it Brash is trying to show he is culturally aware and participates in sharing traditional maori kai with the Maori party leaders, what is it? Fish and chips and tomato sauce :)

End of disorganized ranting . . . . .

391201 2005-09-27 04:23:00 Seriously, I wonder at the mentality of those that wrote the book complaining about sensible advice being given.

I heard that Caccioppoli bloke on the radio this morning, what I heard him say was not at all logical, but then with a name like that what could one expect?

391202 2005-09-27 04:27:00 These statements, like many concerning Maori, are designed to annoy, titilate, frighten or fool the gullible and downright stupid people.

Most Maori are far too smart to be taken in by it. They are probably having a really good laugh thinking about all those non-Maori gnashing their teeth and wringing their hands over it. I am.

391203 2005-09-27 04:31:00 Yes they should "smoke, drink, eat fatty foods, and gamble".

Just like those wonderful role models in Parliament,
