390845 2005-09-25 22:52:00 I just returned from a few days of trout fishing in the Four-Corners area of Arizona, where I intend to live ASAP, and have seen some really wonderful things on the freeway returning to California .

There were (fishermen lie, but not this time!) OVER 200 ambulances (is "ambulii" the plural?) from one company in Los Angeles, going toward Texas, fully loaded with 4 to 6 paramedics each and in long caravans of about 50 or so . These are really big units, dual wheels, diesel powered and full life supporting systems included . Here is an example of one . ( . google . com/imgres?imgurl=http://www . hvfd . org/physical/A249_a . jpg&imgrefurl=http://www . hvfd . org/physical/A249 . html&h=558&w=800&sz=92&tbnid=fBlGhnAW5iYJ:&tbnh=99&tbnw=142&hl=en&start=16&prev=/images%3Fq%3DAmbulance%26svnum%3D50%26hl%3Den%26lr" target="_blank">images . google . com %3D%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg . mozilla:en-US:official_s%26sa%3DG)

The fact that they were all from one company and it is located basically in Los Angeles, makes me feel that I even don't know the extent of the services that are available to the average citizen here . This does not account for the tax-paid civil service ambulances . . this is just one private company making this offer .

There were another 100 or so "Power Pole" trucks that are used to pull power transmission poles out of the ground and replace them with new ones . These trucks are like this one here . ( . lamoine-me . gov/Town%20Hall/Fire%20Dept/Incidents2005/2005-08c . jpg" target="_blank">www . lamoine-me . gov) They also had trailers loaded with replacement poles and crew trucks full of operators to run the stuff .

I also saw IPOD's . . . Instant Power On Demand units behind tractors (NZ translation is missing here . . . it's the diesel unit that runs on the freeway hauling semi-trailors and flatbed stuff) . These were in the dozens .

The weather was slowly clouding over Arizona in the South-East area that I drove thru coming home to SoCal . The hurricane that hit Texas was being felt there too in Arizona by overcast and clouds . Amazing!

Fishing was excellent . . . many trout know what not to bite again; I returned all of them to the waters from which they came . :D

The area is so clear and clean . . . . the air is not chunky nor does it make my eyes and throat burn to inhale . Coming in through Chiriaco Summit, about 200 miles to LA, the smog layer was very visable in the setting sun . The truckers on their CB radios were all saying that a day in that smog was equal to about 3-packs of cigarettes a day habit .

The area I was at was over 7,000 feet altitude, and the temps were the same as here in San Jacinto, California . Gotta move there as fast as I can .

Be still my heart! I loved the pixs . . they make me want to run up to the High Sierras (California) again for a replay .

I caught a few German Browns and a lot of Brookies in the White Mountains this time in the four corners ( . utah . com/playgrounds/four_corners . htm" target="_blank">www . utah . com) area of Arizona . This is where four state come together (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah) . I am in the Arizona side of the corners, just south of the White Mountains at 6,500 feet altitude .

I fish both California and Arizona for trout, and find both places to be generally good with Rainbows and Triploids as good catches . The Brook Trout, pound for pound, are the best fighting fish in the streams though . The Rainbows and German Browns and Speckled Trout seem to be a little less for fighting .

I use only ultra-light gear (4-lb max line) and only use lures . . . no bait . I don't use bait because the trout swallow the hook and render them most of the time non-releasable . Damage to a fish's stomach and throat are not my idea of sport fishing . I pride myself in corner-of-the-mouth hook ups, which heal very quickly and leave the fish not much worse off in 24 hours . Besides, if you were to throw a pizza (NZ word too?) into the lake, you could catch me . . . so bait is not allowed in my gear or boat even in the ocean .

Right now, I am shifting to Large Mouth Bass and Stripers (Striped Bass) . In my ignorance of NZ fish species, I don't know if Bass are in NZ at all . I use lures again . . . no bait . . but I love topwater plugs for the best action .

Imagine a bearclaw coming up out of the water swiping the plug and dragging it underwater for furious action . My knees get weak and the line runs out smoking my drag . I love the fight of bass . . . they have the attitudes of a nasty junkyard dog . If sharks had the personality of a bass, people would be eaten all the time in the ocean, not just once-in-a-while like now . I imagine sharks with bass brains would find some way to get up on land and prowl the streets looking for humans to eat . They are that nasty! But I digressed .

Again, your pixs make me yearn for more Alaskan (http://www . adfg . state . ak . us/) adventures where I had to take private aircraft to pristine waters that probably have not been visited by whites since the native Aleuts left the area, centuries ago . I had an all-expenses paid salmon excursion a few years back that will remain in my brain as my dying dream . We hopped from Gnome Alaska to parts unknown for a three week adventure . I didn't shave, had to boil water to bathe, and ate what I caught with flown-in white wines and vegetables and such . Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh .
