391988 2006-02-27 01:26:00 I have asked a mate in IRC about WoW (he plays, but lives elsewhere in the world) with the intention of playing it, but he reckoned you had to pay a certain amount monthly/yearly to get on a decent server. That kinda put me offNot so much for a decent server, but any/all servers. It costs $15/month (US) to play with discounts for pre-paying large volumes of time.

That said a fair bit of content has been added since the launch date, with still more planned to come. I'm probably going to be skipping the last content expansion (Zul'Gurab) almost entirely, and heading to the latest content to be released (Al Qurij (spelling a little lost)).

Obviously I feel it is worth the money :D

391989 2006-02-27 10:09:00 Sounds daft to pay a monthly fee for online games when many others are free and as good or better!

I've been warmly encouraged to play DoD and about to get the latest version - anyone else here play it?

391990 2006-02-27 20:41:00 I have been converted, I would never have PAID to play a game online 6 months ago.
Blizzard is always updating the game, and their support is worth the $15p/month.

DoD was my religion. But with DoD Source, you had to pay (the original DoD was free as long as you had HL). And I have been unable to convince my cheap as office workers to fork out the cash. So I haven't played it much although I've got it.

I used to make maps for DoD, but alas that has now gone by the wayside because of the cheap nasty attitude of my co-workers. Instead we now play COD2 on the LAN, which is a lot of fun.

A popular online game like Counter Strike might get a couple of hours play a week (on average) for possibly up to 6 months for me.

WoW has had consistently over 12 hours/week play time for me since launch. (nov 04) and it's not stale.. There are many places I still have not explored.. I have not played as some of the classes.

Personally I feel in dollars/hour of entertainment it's come out quite cheap.

391993 2006-02-27 23:32:00 Bruce, maybe next time you lan it up for COD2 make it an internet accessible server (passworded maybe). We could have a 'Forumites' vs 'IDG' game! BF42 is still my fav game (Forgotten Hope mainly - many of us have moved back to 42 from BF2), so it's taking a while to get used to COD2 multiplayer. Jester (13)
391994 2006-02-28 00:17:00 Problem is we don't have a decent box to run a dedicated server off, so I'm just running a listen server off my PC at lunch. Biggles (121)
391995 2006-02-28 00:20:00 Problem is we don't have a decent box to run a dedicated server off, so I'm just running a listen server off my PC at lunch . So . . . anyone want to do a review of servers . . . including some stability and stress testing . .

Then some vendors can loan you test units . Of course the stability testing *may* take some time :D
