2005-09-30 01:11:00 | Turns out that after 4 1/2 hours of trying the parts out etc, that the Case I had purchased had the power + reset cables improperly labelled! :xmouth:

2005-09-30 08:49:00 | Heh, yeah assembling your own PC is a learning curve. I've done the old 110 V trick too :D And remember that you can't trust the motherboard manual or the markings on the board. The only recent disaster I've had is when a dying hard drive actually completely died right when I was thinking about backing up the data. Fortunately, there was a recent full backup on the network though. I rate data loss as the prime worry. Oddly, I still get researchers who almost gleefully tell you that they don't backup or remark "oh that backup hasn't happened for months". And, yes, they only keep the data on their only hard drive. Also you have the odd laptop that gets stolen and yep with all the data too. Physical stuff can just be replaced - don't sweat it (unless you are broke) :2cents:

2005-09-30 10:12:00 | Well I still think I take a lot of beating. 1: Snapped of the clip holding the M/B battery. After Listening to all the advice on PF1 I decided the best fix would be a new motherboard. 2: Got new board and a tube of paste. Put half the tube neatly spread over top of CPU. Put heat sink back on. Gazed in bewilderment at all the paste that had been squeezed out. 3: Removed M/B and gave it and CPU a good wash with petrol. 4: Bought a new M/B and CPU !!! 5: Installed them with minimal amount of paste. Good :D 6: Computer wouldn't boot. 7: Removed CPU. And looked at bent and broken pins :( 8: Bought another M/B and CPU. 9: This time I did it all properly and it worked. :D :D :D 10: And it's still working At least I now know how to replace M/B That sounds expensive!

2005-09-30 10:57:00 | Got an IT aquaintence around to look at it, after fiddling around for an hour with no luck he suddenly realised that I had not plugged the connection from the phone into the back of the router. I humbly admitted my stupidity and paid him accordingly for his time. Moral of the story... check the simple things first because it's probably a fault with the idiot installer :( I would only have paid him for 5mins, cause thats how long it should have taken a techy to spot that. It should have been the first thing he looked for.

2005-09-30 19:56:00 | Beetle- that was a VERY scary post for someone with a vivid imagination  Bartsdad- I agree in principle that it was worth paying for 5 minutes, but the guy fixed it and an idiot should always be willing to pay accordingly for their mistakes :D

2005-09-30 21:51:00 | While telling someone about the 220-100v switch on the back of a PC I flipped it to demonstrate the 100v writing, while saying "never throw this switch when this is plugged into the wall." Someone (probably me, and I had forgotten :D) had plugged it into the wall. *boom*. I was really lucky, it only took the PSU, I've seen PCs where the only component still working was the floppy drive after someone did that. Oh. and on my grandfather's work PC I made a typo while formatting the D drive. Ever noticed how the C and D keys are adjacent... that took till 2am to fix so he was going for work the next day. -Qyiet THANKS so much for sharing this. Its the best laugh I have had in a while, and a great way to start the weekend (knowing that my stupidity is not a rare event among us PF1ers)!!!
