PCWorld had an article a lil while back I'll try and find, but basically its not legal in NZ. Doesnt stop most people thou anyways ;) |

| 670994 | 2008-05-20 07:00:00 | I read a PCWorld article on the subject several years ago. The author (I forget who) was quite emphatic that it is unlawful. | Greg (193) | ||

If someone's parked out front of your house then that's pretty obvious, but if my neighbour had an unsecured connection and, as wratterus mentioned, I played the noob card then I'd say it would be a decent enough excuse. If however my neighbour logged a bunch of P2P traffic against my MAC address (not too difficult to spoof (www.klcconsulting.net)) then that's another story. | sal (67) | ||
| 670996 | 2008-05-20 07:39:00 | One of my work colleagues was setting up his own wireless network and discovered his neighbours was un-encrypted, whats more they had file sharing set up for the whole computer so he left a message on their machine saying they had no encryption he told me it took them3 months to secure it. Stupid or what... | gary67 (56) | ||

Accessing computer system for dishonest purpose (1) Every one is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 7 years who, directly or indirectly, accesses any computer system and thereby, dishonestly or by deception, and without claim of right,— (a) obtains any property, privilege, service, pecuniary advantage, benefit, or valuable consideration; or (b) causes loss to any other person. (2) Every one is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years who, directly or indirectly, accesses any computer system with intent, dishonestly or by deception, and without claim of right,— (a) to obtain any property, privilege, service, pecuniary advantage, benefit, or valuable consideration; or (b) to cause loss to any other person. (3) In this section, deception has the same meaning as in section 240(2). Part 10 (comprising sections 217 to 305) was substituted by a new Part 10 (comprising sections 217 to 272), as from 1 October 2003, by section 15 Crimes Amendment Act 2003 (2003 No 39). |

Not about using a wireless connection to get access to the net . Because some idiot couldnt be bothered securing it . Thats the only thing he's doing (using it to get onto the internet) . The only person who'll be obtaining something is some hacker, if he keeps using limewire and his laptop gets infected, and he gets hacked  |

(a) to obtain any property, privilege, service, pecuniary advantage, benefit, or valuable consideration; orI would say obtaining the use of their internet (service/benefit) without their permission is covered by this. |
