392128 2005-10-05 09:00:00 I would say it's unlikely, as it's their pricing model that allows them to offer the discount, by you having more of your custom with the same company.

The ISP I've been looking at (but haven't yet made the leap, is Xnet (World Exchange - www.wxc.co.nz) - they don't require you to have your tolls with them to get a discount. Their 256k/128k plan (1GB limit, throttled thereafter) is $29.95 No disconnection fee. No connection fee. No minimum contract.

I think someone else is considering Xnet, forget who - I'm kind of waiting for someone to feedback on what they are like as an ISP (have had no problems with them as a toll provider)

Cheers

Ta for the info Lizard. Might check these guys out.

Hmm they're not too far from me either. Since I'm in Mt Eden.

392129 2005-10-06 01:23:00 Yup, I am paying line rental . The normal $41 something a mth .

Since its totally separate from the other line .

Its not a matter of whether I want tolls, on my line, I dont have a phone to make tollcalls on . And both are thru Telecom not Telstra .

I dont want to make tollcalls on this line . This is why I've plugged the modem directly into the phonejack .

I'm not on Broadband . I cant afford it even if the modem, and connection is free . As I'm not working atm .

We have 2 phone lines, both separate . Diff accounts . And 1 phone . Modem on here, is directly connected to the phonejack .

I cant afford BB even if the modem, and connection is free .

As I'm not working atm . If I was working I would ditch a line, and use the flatmates line .
Then as I understand it, you are paying for a line rental, and your flatmate is paying for a line rental . You both have distinct phone lines, with separate phone numbers . Regardless of whether you have a handset plugged into the jack, each phone line is potentially capable of making phone calls (that's what your modem is doing, after all) . Whatever you do with your line will have no effect on your flatmates line, if they are totally (physically) separate .

Then it's really simple . You can choose whomever you want for broadband . If they offer a discount for tolls, then you can take it . All that means is that IF you make a toll call, it's routed through their systems instead of Telecom . As I understand it, most toll providers that offer the $10 discount on their broadband packages don't REQUIRE you to make a minimum number of calls . So if you want to, sign up, say "yes" to their tolls package, and then carry on as normal - pay telecom the line rental ($41 or whatever), and pay the ISP the monthly fee (which would include whatever discount they offer for you to agree to use them for tolls .

Clear as mud?

392130 2005-10-07 08:26:00 Well yer they're separate lines, sep accts, separate phone #'s etc .

That wasnt the question tho . It was whether I could get $10 off if I didnt do any tollcalls .

As I WOULDNT be making any tollcalls at all .

Well yer like now I'm using my line on the net now .

It doesnt affect the flatmates phone at all . She can still get calls . I knew that .

ISP's may offer the $10 discount, but my question was, does it apply if you have no phone and dont make tollcalls .

392131 2005-12-03 01:59:00 they say "$10 discount if you USE their tolls" so i don't know. What i am confused about is if the quility of these small companies is any good. I know slingshot is a piece of crap, never go there. Wolrd exchange sounds good on the webpage but whats the catch? **** quality i suspect elmo (8988)
392132 2005-12-03 10:29:00 I'm lost .

You say that you cannot afford Broadband

I'm not on Broadband . I cant afford it even if the modem, and connection is free . As I'm not working atm .

But your first post was about getting Broadband . . .

When signing up for Broadband, with some ISP's (like Ihug), they give you a discount (like $10 . 00), if you make tolls with them as well .

IF you are looking at broadband I cannot understand why you don't ditch your line, pay 50% of your flatmate's line and use that for your broadband, saving you $20 . 50 or so per month 1/2 your current line rental costs), and don't even bother about a tolls offer, or go with whoever the flattie is with for tolls .

What are you paying at the moment for dial up plus $41? That is likely to be more than the basic $30 ADSL options plus $20 . 50?

Just don't use the flatmate's phone at all, which you wont anyway as you don't now . It wont affect the flatmate's telephone services at all .

As far as using their tolls to get a discount, which is your question (although somewhat of a hypothetical one if you aren't going Broadband), this has been answered, all you do is say 'yes' but you don't have to actually make the toll calls, but if absolutely have to they will go thru their system and you will be charged separately .

392133 2005-12-03 13:40:00 To have your own phone line is around $30 dollars, weather you make toll calls or just local calls, and to get the $10 discount for a ISP if you switch tolls over to them, even if you dont make any tolls is the cheaper option I say go for it. You can still make your tolls VoIP/skype. Rob99 (151)
392134 2005-12-03 23:38:00 Get rid of the phone line, use your flatmates phone line to use the internet for 30 minutes or so each day.

Spend the saved money on printing copies of your CV and bying work clothes, and the 30 minutes online to look at job sites.

Get a job, afford broadband (with or without tolls).
