392118 2005-09-29 20:34:00 When signing up for Broadband, with some ISP's (like Ihug), they give you a discount (like $10.00), if you make tolls with them as well.

What if you dont use / have a phone (like myself)?

My modem is plugged directly into the phonejack.

I dont need one, (and havent used a phone on my line, for the last 2-3 + years), since there's 2 separate phonelines in this flat.

The other line isnt mine, but is usually needed so my flatmate can get calls from work (she's usually on-call).

I know u can use a phone while using Broadband, BUT I dont think she would like me, using her line for broadband and phone. And making tollcalls on her phone! Just to get a discount of $10.00.

Would you still HAVE the option of getting the discount, even if you dont have a phone to make toll calls?

I would say it's unlikely, as it's their pricing model that allows them to offer the discount, by you having more of your custom with the same company .

The ISP I've been looking at (but haven't yet made the leap, is Xnet (World Exchange - www . wxc . co . nz) - they don't require you to have your tolls with them to get a discount . Their 256k/128k plan (1GB limit, throttled thereafter) is $29 . 95 No disconnection fee . No connection fee . No minimum contract .

I think someone else is considering Xnet, forget who - I'm kind of waiting for someone to feedback on what they are like as an ISP (have had no problems with them as a toll provider)

Cheers

392120 2005-09-30 06:34:00 Would you still HAVE the option of getting the discount, even if you dont have a phone to make toll calls? Are you paying Telecom line rental for your phone line? If you are, then you should be able to get the discount for tolls as you have a telephone number. They only offer the discount for the same line (telephone number) that your ADSL is associated with. If you never actually make toll calls, that doesn't matter. The ISP will give you the discount because if you did make a toll call, then they get their slice from that. Jen (38)
392121 2005-09-30 08:37:00 I've already grumbled about this on the Orcon forums (they have the whole $10 discount going to).

In the age of cellphones there isn't much use for a normal phone line in a falt for example. All you end up is with damn flatmates who are slow to pay for their toll calls (and the rental too) :(

Also, you can't use Telecom services such as fax and Calltrack if you join someone else for tolls...

Anyway, with Orcon I read there is no minimum use. So you could just sign up and never bother making any toll calls. As long as the phone account is under your name no problems.

392122 2005-10-04 00:21:00 I don't see why you can't ditch one line and use adsl on just the one line, your flatmates calls will still come through even with you online. That way you save over $40.00 a month. Or you could go the whole hog and ditch telecom alltogether and get Woosh (if you are within coverage) and get the voip gateway. The gateway can be plugged into your existing internal phone lines allowing phones in all rooms if you wish, for this to work you must dissconnect the internal phonelines from the external line as this can damage the gateway.
I have been on this system since rollout and am pleasantly supprised at the service.

392123 2005-10-04 10:15:00 Let's get something cleared up....

Are you currently....

a. Connecting your broadband via a telephone line that is used by your flatmate? As in, if you plug a phone into the jack, will you be able to make/receive calls?
OR
b. Or, using your own telephone line? As in your flatmate uses the phone line for her phone, and you have another one. You don't use the phone line for voice services, you use internet ADSL on that then, but you still pay the landline rental fees..

Cause as far as I know, you can't get "naked DSL". As in just having a internet broadband service on a landline, without paying phone rental fees.

No, look at it this way. If you don't want your tolls (and the whole phone line in Telstras case) with them they punish you by charging an extra $10.
Which is why I moved the lot to Telecom.

Which is why I moved the lot to Telecom.Your rationale makes no logical sense. The ISP's are trying to make the product more viable by bundling it with tolls as there is a better margin on toll calls than on scraping the dust off reselling ADSL. All you're doing is fueling Telecom's monopoly stronghold and making it that much harder for the smaller ISP's.

There's no minimum spend with most providers (aside from Slingshot), as long as you go across to them for tolls it's no skin of either of your noses. They make a bit if you make toll calls, you make a bit by saving $10.

392126 2005-10-05 08:17:00 AND....

I have tolls with my ISP as well... But as I dial most of my national calls with this company "Digiplus", they give you a suffix to dial (0567) anyway. So if you move your tolls, you can still use the suffix to dial....

And for overseas calls, I use those cheap telephone cards, quite good....

Yup, I am paying line rental . The normal $41 something a mth .

Since its totally separate from the other line .

Its not a matter of whether I want tolls, on my line, I dont have a phone to make tollcalls on . And both are thru Telecom not Telstra .

I dont want to make tollcalls on this line . This is why I've plugged the modem directly into the phonejack .

I'm not on Broadband . I cant afford it even if the modem, and connection is free . As I'm not working atm .

We have 2 phone lines, both separate . Diff accounts . And 1 phone . Modem on here, is directly connected to the phonejack .

I cant afford BB even if the modem, and connection is free .

As I'm not working atm . If I was working I would ditch a line, and use the flatmates line .
