| 391878 | 2005-09-28 20:28:00 | Sorry for another Maori-bashing thread  but really . . . A Waikato marae collective has vowed to block a bridge to stop a 255-tonne transformer reaching Huntly Power Station . Huntly's Waahi Whanui Trust members say they will stop traffic crossing Tainui Bridge in protest at what they claim has been a lack of consultation and recognition from Genesis Energy . Trust chairman Taitimu Maipi said the protest was seen as the only way to get the heads of Genesis Energy, Solid Energy and Environment Waikato to discuss whanau concerns and talk about compensation . "We are very strict on this, there will be a protest on that bridge and nothing will get across unless our conditions are met . " He said 1 per cent of the cost of the upgrade - a formula used to provide compensation when the power station was built - was appropriate . The power station upgrade has cost around $450 million, which would equate to compensation of about $4 . 5 million . Mr Maipi said the region had seen few benefits other than some jobs to compensate for the environmental and visual impact of the development . He said the company offered to provide around $100,000 worth of upgrades at the marae including new roads, carparks and drainage . "They came back with [Labour MP] Nanaia Mahuta and said, 'Yeah sure you can do that but we want $200,000 in cash as well' . We declined that . " Leaving the Maori part out for a sec, let me get this straight: Boo hoo . A bloody big piece of machinery is blocking our view ("visual impact") but I'll feel much better if you give me 100,000 bucks . . . no, wait . . . make that 100 Grand plus another 200,000 in "compensation" . Then I won't care about the view . Say what? |

Some people assume all moneys turned over is expendable, and will want a cut if there is any form of extortion that can be applied . No different from the person who stops a development by deciding that the property they were selling for 6 figures is suddenly worth 8 figures, because they think they can, or hotels tripling their prices as soon as there are no others in town, or the west coasters who killed my attempts to put further events on over there by demanding i pay "costs" that no one else had to pay simply because the monster i had was thought to be big enough to bleed (to it's death as it turned out) So what's the issues here? Smoke? Trucks? Visible constructions? That sort of thing? The CO2 produced to electricly heat the area is LESS than what would be made heating with standard enclosed fireplaces . Trucks are a problem? There are hundreds of trucks that pass my house each day . I am glad of this as it means people are doing something useful, and can possibly feed their familys without having to deal with the self degradation of our welfare system . I'm one of the people moving things in trucks . Trucks are generally part of the chain of events that means things be a happening . Visible constructions? Darn it, who let those other people on my planet? Standard extortion, nothing new, and certainly not anything unique to moari . If anything its a trick moari have learnt from watching whitey . :p |

Although frustrating and on, apparently, spurious grounds, it's not disimilar to the people who made subtle or unsubtle demands when I was doing development resource consents . And, of course, if it kept us out of a notified hearing and was economic, we'd sit down and talk . Sometimes we even managed to persuade people of the errors in their ways . . . . but usually we coughed to some extent . |

| 391883 | 2005-09-29 11:52:00 | Hang on moment.....let's back up that big truck for a moment. There is more than one way to Huntly power station. I know for a fact you can get there without crossing the Tainui bridge - if the truck is heading south into Huntly, then all they have to do is turn off SH1 at Glen Murray and take the road south on the western side of the Waikato and hey presto, guess where it comes out? You guessed it, the Huntly power station! And if they are heading north in Huntly then there are other roads that will get you there without crossing that bridge either. I've travelled those roads squillions of times as a way of avoiding Auckland holiday traffic. So........I suspect this story carries as much truth as......as......something that isn't true. But I guess in the mean time we will have to wait and see what passes under the bridge and just cross that bridge when we come to it.....and to round out the bad cliche's I suspect it will be a journey (and story?) of 2 halves! My 2c Andrew :) |
