| 390614 | 2005-09-25 00:49:00 | Do you think the playstation 3 is going to kill the market for low end computers? Almost every family will have a PS3 probably within a year of the launch & it ships with linux preinstalled, so all you will have to do is connect a keyboard & mouse and it will do everything the $1000 PCs can do. | Greven (91) | ||

What makes you think almost everyone will have one? Not one of my friends or relatives are interested in it. And do what with it? Word Processing? Email and internet? Accounts? Photo editing? |

I mean its all nice and happy saying you have a few CPU's to work with but games don't fit so well to parallel architecture anyway. Then again, developers bitched about emotion engine in PS2, and they've got that to a fine art now. It'll still be a gaming machine, I love my PC too much, plus real CRT monitors kick a crappy tv any day. |

| 390619 | 2005-09-26 08:14:00 | does the processor support x86 platform kernals? then no, its useless, if you cant harness the power, then it is of no use. | Tux (606) | ||
| 390620 | 2005-09-26 09:39:00 | a processor doesn't 'support' kernals, the kernal is coded to support it . Open standards have meant that a kernal that works on one processor will work on another (ie . amd vs intel to an extent) . I don't see why you say the ack of a x86 kernal means that no power can be harnessed, that is unless you want to port linux onto it . It would be quite a mission to port it to cell architecture especially as it won't be openly documented to the public . I expect it will happen eventually, there are folks with that much time :) |

| 390621 | 2005-09-26 11:09:00 | x86 platform kernals include the ms and the linux series, but from my memeory they run an ibm powerpc architecture which doesnt support ms. of course, they could recode the kernal, but hey, why do that, its designed for optimum fps, plus whats the point in running pc games on a gaming console, way different controls | Tux (606) | ||
| 390622 | 2005-09-26 12:22:00 | I dont see what would stop the linux kernel running on the Cell platform. Im sorry but you're not making terribly much sense Tux. Based on PPC? Maybe so, but they've got the Linux kernel running fine on PPC. Look at the likes of Yellowdog, and Ubuntu PPC! The linux kernel has also been made to run perfectly on x64 (Speaking from experience, im running an Athlon x64 chip now). You seem to be argueing both sides of the arguement here :-/ Greven: Do you have any info about which Distro its going to ship with? Will it be Sonys own distro? Im sorry but Ive not really been reading up about the PS3 |

Im sorry but Ive not really been reading up about the PS3 Sony hasn't announced what distro it is going to ship with. I would expect it to be their own distro because then they can optimise everything for cell architecture. I wonder if they will be brave enough to include a non-crippled version of mplayer? |
