393768 2005-10-06 01:39:00 Windows Vista / Windows Code Name Longhorn

I arrived home from work with the treasured prize in my hands, the much sought after Windows Vista beta Version 1.
I inserted the DVD into my computer and rebooted and sure enough there it was, the Windows Vista Install Screen.
I followed the directions that it gave me, entering my liscence code and telling the installer to install it to my E: drive and then went and watched TV for about an hour and a half.
I loaded it on and realises that it wasnt gonna work with my screen (well not yet anyway) so I booted into safe mode and there it was windows vista in the horrid windows classic theme.
I installed my dirvers and then booted back into vista (not in safe mode) and at last the prize had come, the grandest of windows'es windows vista.

The Start Menu Has not gone through much of a graphical change but it certainly functions better and such features as the program lookup to load your favourite programs by keywords make a huge difference in both useability and geek-appeal.
Internet Exporer 7 Was interesting too, and i am no longer sure if i need firefox!
Internet Explorer 7 has caught up with all the features of fire fox and gone even further in graphical appeal.
The theme of Vista is pretty and has finnaly done away with the “green lollipop” start button of XP and made a nicer one :P.

Exporer has had a revamp with all manner of pretty colours and other such prettiness but still hasnt changed much at all except becoming a tad more tricky to use!
Windows Media Player 10 is nice and all and its features are cool but I still think tat there is room for improvemnt on themes that fit in with longhorn.

Graphically Longhorn is a Lot nicer and There is a Heck of a Lot of Nice Features too.

Graphics: 9.5/10
Funtionality: 8/10

393773 2005-10-06 02:24:00 Is there a limitation period to beta? requires authentication?

Cause I myself have a copy of build 5219. But I don't want to install it over my winxp if I have to uninstall everything....

On another note, if you guys are keen on getting IE7, you can.. Just browse around the net for it, there's a standalone upgrade. Beta, of course...

You get a either 15 or 30 day test period before you're forced to activate. (can't remember which).

If you're going to install a beta OS, then you should know about partioning. Install vista on a different partition, and when you boot up you will be able to choose between XP and Vista.

BETA 1 installed for me while i was in XP, so i think 5219 would be similar. And with B1, (doubt it's changed) you were unable to upgrade XP to Vista, so in other words you can't install it over XP.

Pretty generous for a BETA build that offer little new functionality over XP don't you think? IMO Vista is nothing new except a new UI (which is was to over glossed - reminds me of SUSE). However i know that this is a raw BETA, and more of the end-user features are missing.

Not trying to be negative, i think Vistas going to be good, and worth the upgrade - allthough an OS shouldnt require the same specs as Doom 3 - however this is a BETA, theres not much new except a different interface, so i think 9.8 may be a bit 2 far up there.
