| 393184 | 2005-10-04 01:41:00 | I'm in the market for some noise cancelling headphones - to hopefully make a flight to LA on Saturday a bit more tolerable. Can anyone make any recommendations for brands or models? They seem to vary in price quite significantly (from $50 for Aiwa from DFS to $219 for Sony from the same place). I want a decent pair that will do a good job - but I'm more wanting them to cancel out the constant airplane drone rather than make music easier to listen to. I know Sony are usually good at this kind of stuff, but I'd like to hear if anyone else has other suggestions. Oh, and keeping in mind that I need to get them before Saturday, and preferrably from a duty free store (Regency or DFS) :) Any assistance appreciated! |

My father purchased some of the $250 ear bud variety, and I got some $90 (I think) round the back of the neck variety. I liked my ones better, they were more comfortable, and I felt they had better sound quality (I may be biased). You had to turn the noise cancellation off outside if there was any wind though, as the mics would pick it up, and blow your ears out. The only other downside on noise cancelling headphones is the bulky attachment that holds the battery and the DSP. To be honest the last set of headphones I purchased was a regular set of ear buds, just because it was getting stupid having a creative muvo2, and a similar size DSP attached to my headphones. -Qyiet |

Just rang him to check and he said that they are Phillips but that they are now four years old. They worked for 6-7 hours but then needed re-charging and he thought that nowadays there would be better ones around. He previously said that they cost in excess of NZ$200. Still at four years old I think he might be a bit tough - they have obviously been working well previously. Misty ;) |

I've tried mdrnc11 of sony noise cancelling earphones.Their sound quality is good overall.I didn't hear much noise cancelling between those earphones and mdrex71sl.I suggest you buy a mdrex71sl.It blocks alot more outside noises then any other earphones and these pair of earphone have big bass too |

The ones I saw in Noel Leemings had a plane on the box (got to be a good sign, right?) and were $150 or so, I think. They seemed to be nicely in the middle between the stupidly cheap and the ridiculously expensive, so might be the way to go. The annoying thing is that you can't test headphones to find out which ones are best, you just have to rely on what people tell you and the brand names :( |

Most Hi fi shops will let you e . g Eastern Hi fi and in fact most Hi fi shops wil let you take gear home for weekend trials if you talk nicely to them . Cheers |

Cheers I think I'd be extremely lucky to find a shop on the Kapiti Coast which will let me do that :( In fact, when I was in Noel Leemings, one of the Phillips headphone packages had obviously been opened so someone could have a look at them, but the salesman wouldn't even let me do that . I think I'll have to go on recommendations only . . . especially living in these parts . |
