392976 2005-10-02 02:27:00 I need a Scanner for Windows XP can anyone recommend one. I have a perfectly good printer so don't want to get a combined scanner/printer. Pato (2463)
392977 2005-10-02 03:17:00 I use a MEMOREX 6142U ( . google . com/froogle?q=memorex+6142u&num=50&hl=en&hs=ddt&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org . mozilla:en-US:official_s&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler" target="_blank">froogle . google . com) flatbed (here on a Froogle WebPage) and it gives me good resolution and simplicity . . . . I use it with the free PICASSA2 ( . google . com/index . html" target="_blank">picasa . google . com) by Google . It recognises most TWAIN/TWUNK hardware too . .

It's a 42-bit scanner, not the newest nor the oldest, but finding the driver took me a while . I at first ran it in Windows 2000 mode (I'm using XP-Pro, as it lets you run hardware in other then XP mode if you need to), and then later changed the driver to an XP one . The support CD-ROM didn't have an XP driver on it .

I found a pair of driver sites that really has a good catalogs for such devices: one called WAYBACKMACHINE ( . waybackmachine . org/), and another one I use a lot called: DRIVERGUIDE . (http://members . driverguide . com/ums/index . php?action=r&furl=aHR0cDovL21lbWJlcnMuZHJpdmVyZ3VpZGUuY29tL2Rya" target="_blank">www . waybackmachine . org/), and another one I use a lot called: DRIVERGUIDE . (http: XZlci9kZXRhaWwucGhwP2FjdGlvbj1kb3dubG9hZCZkcml2ZXJ pZD0xMTkwOTk=)

I think I bought it here in the US new for $50 or less at Staples Office Supplies, Hemet California .

It is USB device .

392978 2005-10-02 03:33:00 Thanks for your helpful comments Joe. Google gave me a lot of info on models but it is always nice to hear from the person using a particular make/model. The flatbed scanncer doesn't seem so popular now that they have the combined models. Pato (2463)

I don't like things that have too many purposes and functions . . . I prefer a specialized device to perform the job for which it was designed and not trying to be a jack of all trades . . as it were .

Lazyness of people and trying to condense functions into one peice of equiptment is kinda silly . . . suppose the FAX part of an AIO unit goes South? Then you have a very limited use paperweight on your desk . Lose a function, and you usually lose something else too .

No . . . I like having one piece do something well and if I need a different function, buy the appropriate device to perfrom that job .

Besides, the very unpopularity of the flatbed makes the prices lower too .

392980 2005-10-02 04:13:00 I bought a cheapo ($99) flatbed scanner (Artec) from the Warehouse Stationery two years ago. It has been used regularly, performed far beyond my expectations so I can recommend this product - if it is still available. Oldferix (5581)
392981 2005-10-02 04:38:00 Is it working with Windows XP. That sounds as tho it would do me as I don't want anything flash. Pato (2463)
392982 2005-10-02 04:38:00 I've found ScanTips (www.scantips.com) a really useful site when it comes to scanning and what you need to match what you want. Have a look at "Never Used A Scanner Before?" & "Evaluating Scanner Features" on the Main page. Murray P (44)

Oh, yes...it works with XP (both versions) and it works very well.....

I had a hard time finding the correct driver, so when you (or if you) get this flatbed, I have the site and the public domain driver for it too....it will run on XP in the 2000 emulation mode if you want...that's what it is designed for anyway....but XP has a new driver for it and I found no loss of compatability or function in either driver.

392984 2005-10-02 06:08:00 Pato, you will probably have to privately import that model here into NZ, as I doubt you will find it stocked by anyone (at least Google shows nobody selling it, nor PriceSpy).

Best to get an off-the-shelf model that is supported here, there are dozens of them and they start at around NZ $95

Typical one is:
