393194 2005-10-05 00:20:00 Bugger, even Palmy has 2-3 hi fi stores! Haven't tried noise cancelling phones myself but know some people who have tried the BOSE ones and well weren't impressed (Out your price range anyway). The only other advice would be if you have any spare time www.head-fi.org is a huge forum for headphone users worldwide however they tend toward the more expensive phones...

393195 2005-10-05 06:41:00 I have Bose myself and find them very good indeed. Plane noise is reduced to a low hum, but you can still hear conversations, or even a newspaper rustling across the aisle. Music reproduction is also excellent.

Whatever you buy, don't get the "in ear" or "on-ear" variety, they don't work as well, let in extraneous noise and get uncomfortable during long periods of usage.

Try to find a brand you can afford that has well padded earcups, they block out noise even when the noise cancelling isn't switched on and are much more comfortable to wear for long periods.

I find mine so good I even use them while doing long road trips for business. Reduces fatigue and lets me listen to CDs at the same quality I'd have from a home stereo.

Safety-wise, there is no problem hearing horns, sirens or whatever.

Cheers

393196 2005-10-05 18:25:00 Thanks guys for all of your help and suggestions. I took your comments on board and looked somewhere in the middle and ended up getting the Sony MDRNC6 headphones (www.amazon.co.uk) for $129 from DFS. They seem to be a nice compromise, not too expensive, decent warranty, known brand. pixeldust (6619)
393197 2005-10-08 06:37:00 I know this is a post for Noise Cancelling Headphones, but I had problems with mine. I could hear a hissing sound at times that was very distracting. Instead I tried these EX29 noise reduction or noise isolation headphones (http://www.quietheadphones.com) . And, hey, not batteries either. Good headphone reviews too. Just my two cents. bigoak (9004)
393198 2007-11-05 23:22:00 Hi everyone,
I am also looking for some noise cancelling headphones.
What I am after is a set that I can use in a noisy workshop environment ( something that can do what grade four -five earmuffs can do & also provide me with an ambient level signal from my mp3 player.
Last year on a flight to New York a passenger let me try some Bose QC2 phones. I was impressed by the sound quality & the noise cancellation, but i wonder how thet would go in a high frequency environment pumping about 90db of background noise.
Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks, Dean

393199 2007-11-06 00:20:00 Further to my earlier post in this thread, I was working in an extremely noisy environemnt recently (underneath a huge wood chipper) and although using the top grade of earmuffs I found the noise levels too high for comfort and I also couldn't hear the colleague I was working with.

I went to my car and got my Bose Quiet Comfort 2 noise cancelling headphones, and they worked like magic. They were a quantum leap better then G5 earmuffs and I could hear when I was spoken to!

Whatever brand you buy, get the type that surround your ear completely, anything else is a compromise for sound cancellation, and no matter how light they are, the on-ear type gets uncomfortable after a few hours because to keep out the noise the pads have to press hard enough to make a good seal on your ears. I have worn the QC 2's for several hours straight on flights to LA and back with no discomfort at all. Price becomes irrelevant when performance is that good.

Cheers

393200 2007-11-06 06:25:00 Since my last post on this subject my family have bought me Sennheiser CX300 earphones, which are really great. However they do go into the ear as opposed to clamping against so do not appear to be what you are looking for, for longer time periods. (believe they cost over $120 - but not supposed to know ;) )

Good luck !!

What can I say?,it's the truth.

There must be some good kit in those Bose jobbies at $650 and you say I was skiting.
