2005-10-04 22:00:00 | We move into our new house today and I just learned that the seller has paid his subscription at the place up until December. The aerial/dish thing is still there. He's happy for us to use his service. Is it simply a matter of plugging the cable into the TV to make it work? I've never had Sky before. Also, can I get the regular TV (ie TV1, 2 and 3) channels via the dish, given that the house doesn't have a normal aerial? Thx

2005-10-04 22:12:00 | You can get the usual 1,2 and 3 thru the sky dish and a better reception with it as well. But I think yoiu need the decoder machine as well. Never has Sky though a few friends have. Not much help but.... | mark c (247) | |

You will have to contact Sky to get a decoder. All the free-to-air channels are available on Sky digital. When you move the dish is normally left behind and if necessary they install al new dish at your new house. If the guy who moved out of the house is staying in NZ won't he use his existing Sky sub at his new house? I guess Sky will answer all your questions when you call them. |

2005-10-04 22:27:00 | Hi Greg. Had a similar set of circumstances a couple of years ago. I ended up paying for the installation of a new standard aeriel. The former owner must have notified Sky of his new address because they pestered the daylights out of me for weeks, offering various discounts because the dish was already installed, etc. | Scouse (83) | |
2005-10-04 22:33:00 | the sky sub goes with the customer. when he moves, the decoder normally goes with him and so does the service. you will need to get a sky acc and pay for install etc. however i have seen a few houses sold with sky included, the old owner simply swaps over his details to yours. you can get 1,2,3 through the dish but you still have to pay sky. i think tv1,2 still run free to air via sat but you will need to buy a sat reciever.

2005-10-04 22:48:00 | the sky sub goes with the customer. when he moves, the decoder normally goes with him and so does the service Okay, I think I'm beginning to understand... The estate agent said the seller is leaving his "camcoder" but being Asian with a poor English accent I guess she meant he's leaving his decoder. She also said that the sub is paid up until December, so I guess that I'll get a month or so free TV. I'm not interested in Sky TV, but if I can use the service for free channels with no payment, and the receptions is as good as a normal aerial, then I'm away, right? Thanks for the feedback.

2005-10-04 22:55:00 | Once the sub has expired, Sky will reposess the decoder (they own it as part of the subscription service) . Then you will not be able to get any reception, the dish will not work when directly fed from the TV .

2005-10-04 23:12:00 | also when if the acc is cancelled (which it sounds like it is) then they will get a hefty bill if the decoder is not returned. (somewhere around $800 last i heard). so it would be wise for them to return it. but if I can use the service for free channels with no payment sorry, no. the "free to air" channels are part and parcell of skys network, you have to pay $$ to get them.

2005-10-04 23:37:00 | You also have to activate the decoder through Sky - without this activation card inserted and verified you get nothing. | d.murray (276) | |
2005-10-04 23:51:00 | It is possible to utilise the Sky dish with another privately owned decoder and get at least 1,2 and Maori TV plus some others. http://www.satlinknz.co.nz/ http://www.telsat.co.nz/
