672997 2008-05-27 05:47:00 Does anyone know of something similar to FreeNAS, or Amahi, which is Debian based and has a "nice" web GUI interface for managing Samba shares? It must be idiot-proof to set up and configure, with minimal editing of config files etc.

I have tried SWAT, and Webmin's web ui's for Samba, and both are horrible.

672998 2008-05-27 14:02:00 Recently invested some time setting up an old PC as a media server, running on Linux. During the process I tried a number of distributions with a 'server'focus.

One of these was Debian "Net Install" found at www.debian.org This provided a simple setup for a number of server options including a samba file server.

Other options you might want to have a look at BEL Server Basic (pclosbe.org). It is based on the PCLinuxOS 2007 Linux distribution, (http://www.pclinuxos.com).

Another worth a mention is eBox (http://ebox-platform.com), a framework which has network services and a management application, for these services.

Both BEL and ebox used a web interface but also can be configured directly. I think BEL uses Webmin but I seem to recal that ebox has its on interface (or a modified Webmin.) Actuall I think I ended up running Webmin on the Debian "Net Install" box as well.

I ended up using Debian "Net Install" for the NAS/Media server, however has now been recommisioned as a Fedora box, my first look into 'Red Hat' territory...

Cheers

672999 2008-05-27 20:55:00 Thanks Ichtus - will have a look. eBox looks quite promising; and I've also found "ClarkConnect" which I'll have a play with soon. somebody (208)

Which also does file/print server functions.
