672489 2008-05-25 22:37:00 Hi guys

Here's a run down of the problem.

Shut down my PC last night and when I woke this morning found that it was stuck on the shutting down splash screen.
Hit the reset button.
The PC began booting up. The XP splash screen appeared as normal, then when the login screen would normally appear I got a black screen.
Hit the reset button again, rebooted in Safe mode, which started fine.
Rolled back to the last restore point, PC restarted.
The PC began booting up. The XP splash screen appeared as normal, then when the login screen would normally appear I got a black screen, again.

Would appreciate any help with this.

Cheers
Justin

672491 2008-05-25 22:59:00 Might be a video display issue, as noted here (www.techspot.com)... kahawai chaser (3545)
672492 2008-05-25 23:20:00 probably your graphics drivers are out of date pingu45 (13461)
672493 2008-05-25 23:30:00 Firstly, while going through the BIOS POST, tap F8 and select Enable VGA mode, see if that makes any difference.

Try safe mode if that doesn't work.

If you can get into just safe mode with command line, do a chkdsk /r.

Try those and get back to us.

Hi Speedy

CPU is AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, dual core, socket AM2, 2GHz, and I'm running SP3.

I've had no issues since installing SP3 about three weeks ago, and the system has been stable up till this morning.

I'll give the other suggestions a shot tonight.

Tried booting into VGA mode, still won't boot. :(

Tried booting into safe mode, boots fine. :)

Ran chkdsk /r in cmd and got this.

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

So chkdsk and got this,

C:\Documents and Settings\Justin>chkdsk

672496 2008-05-26 09:59:00 I may have solved the problem .

I rolled back to a pre-SP3 restore point and rebooted . Everything booted up fine and appears to be up and running again .

Some related questions

Do you think it's worthwhile updating my video card drivers to the latest versions? I can only guess there was some type of conflict between the driver and SP3 (though I had been running SP3 for about three weeks without any problems) .
Is there anything you suggest I do to maintain stability?
And should I be worried by the file system problems that chkdsk found (below)? Should I do a fix?

Thanks
Justin

672497 2008-05-26 10:15:00 Could have been some corrupted files for something, esp if it was working OK for 3 weeks on SP3, normally any sort of problems will occur right away.

What you have to look at is what was changed just before the problem happened , even the slightest small update may have been the cause.

I wouldn't bother upgrading the graphic drivers - all to often people jump in and "must have the latest" - wait till any bugs that real world usage finds, then upgrade only if the upgrade will improve the PC.

If you want to run a check, then use chkdsk /f.
