672446 2008-05-25 16:51:00 How in the world can I get Home and Pro to talk to each other thru the LAN?

Using a router and CAT5e, and although they "see" each other, there is no other communication .

I tried syncing dual Briefcases and I tried file sharing with both towers allowed and enabled .

Nope .

I think XP Home used a different default workgroup name.

672449 2008-05-25 19:38:00 1) Subnet mask has got to be the same for both computers as well.
2) Can they ping each other?
3) Launch command prompt on one of the computers. Enter the following command to check whether it can find the other computer:
net view

Cheers :)

672451 2008-05-25 20:29:00 Hey Jamuz:

This is kinda strange . . . what if it's NOT a wireless connex I'm running and they are wired with CAT5e to a router and then to dialup?? Same thing?

In this case ->

DAD = dialup primary with XP-Pro, . 7 GHz; DSL Linksys 10/100 LAN card to router and a dial modem card to telephone line . There is ONLY dialup at that station . . . it's 'way out in the boonies in the hills of San Diego .

MOM = newly-added puter with XP-Home, 2 . 5GHz; DSL card as above . . but also has a dialup modem card in it . . . . although it is disabled .

Assuming the Internet is connected via broadband (ADSL) connection on DAD

1 . Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Network Connections
2 . Left-click on wireless adapter once HUH?
3 . Hold down the Ctrl key and left-click on broadband connection once
4 . Right-click on either of the connections, and click "Bridge Connections"
5 . When correctly done, both the wireless adapter and broadband connection icons should appear under a new heading called "Network Bridge"

What I want to do ultimately is retire the (now) tower (XP-Pro) with some "problems" but a lot of files on it, to let it play card games and then transfer all the files and such to the newer puter . . the one with XP-Home . I want to then swap the places where they are in different rooms of the house and allow the OLD DAD to use the dialup connex when NEW DAD is running .

I want to swap the MOM and DAD roles at that point .

I know the speeds are gonna get crippled . . but there's no caps there and they can grind for days if they need to .

Once it's done, the new MOM won't be asking to go online anyway, but I want them to have file-sharing capability anyway .

Later on I will swap Pro into OLD MOM:NEW DAD (yes I can!) and that should be the end of that .

Hey! Another good idea . . . maybe I'll try to put PCLos in it too!

Yeah! Good idea!!! :groan:

672452 2008-05-25 23:33:00 Well you cant transfer / copy files (programs that are already installed from one computer to the other. They wont work.

You'll have to install the program on the other computer.

Just as long as

1. The workgroup names are the same
2. You configure file sharing if any firewalls are installed (besides XP's)
3. Create and share a folder (dont share the whole hdd)

It should work

672453 2008-05-26 01:45:00 See if this helps (there is a free (time-limited) version, I've used it before, should work for you).

Mostly I want to send a lot of JPEGS and MP3s and a few WMVs over to the other . . . . and there's a lot of GTalk downloaded files and chats that are, for some reason, precious to this person . . . not me .

Will there be any trouble sending encrypted files though? Will I have to de-encrypt them first or just send them as they are?

The actual OPSYS will stay until I can decide if I want to add another drive or try a dual boot with Pro and Home . . and maybe then just get Pro up and running and delete Home .

If I can send the encrypted stuff over, will the same passwords work there then?

672455 2008-05-26 03:22:00 How or what program did you use to encypt them with??

I dont encrypt files myself. So dont know whether it'll work or not

If you used XP Pro, XP Home doesnt have the option

Did you create and share a folder on both??
