395465 2005-10-15 09:33:00 It's official. :horrified

It is now an ex-drill.

Its chuck is frozen stiffer than a Norwegian Blue.

It has lost its grip on the essentials of life.

It has ceased to torque.

It has chucked in the towel (Couldn't resist that).

IT IS NO MORE!!

No flowers by request.

Parrot jokes OK.

Cheers

Or worked?

I'm curious.................m :D

I initially tried:

Ripping the skin off my hands trying to close it

Soaking with CRC.

Loosening the LH thread screw at the bottom of the jaws.

Tapping and banging gently on the head of a screwdriver in that screw to see if it would jar anything loose.

Dropped in a heated drill bit to see if expansion would help.

Tapped with hammer on front of chuck to jar it loose.

Applied some minor impact to the jaws inside with a nail punch.

The above were my initial attempts, followed by:

Using a growler (strong 50Hz electromagnetic field) to vibrate the chuck to shake the jaws free.

Hammered the living daylights out of the front of the chuck to see if I could beat it into submission.

Dismantled the drill, dropped 16 tiny ball-bearings from the torque control everywhere while removing the epicyclic gearbox, couldn't go past the front of the gearbox for lack of dismantleability.

Worked out how you fit sixteen ball-bearings back into 8 holes, they go on top of each other for god's sake! (Pedants and religious zealots please note lower case god to avoid offending your respective deities.)

Decided that the only means of removal must be by taking out LH thread screw at bottom of chuck jaws and prising chuck assembly off shaft.

Reassembled drill, checked it all still worked, removed screw, levered and prised the living bejesus out of the whole assembly, nothing broke, nothing moved.

Decided that the LH-thread screw must hold the chuck on the shaft, ergo impact could theoretically drive shaft backwards. Loosened it, inserted screwdriver into head and hammered further bejesus. Sudden downwards movement of screwdriver gave burst of hope. Something had finally given way!!

No evidence of chuck movement, with much effort, removed screw and found that the words "high tensile" or "hardened" had been left out of manufacturer's engineering texts. The thread had sheared off (not stripped mind) just vanished inside the mating hole at the bottom of the chuck. It was theoretically rooted!

Strong words were said.

Consigned remains to my "spare parts that might come in useful" box (neat little motor with electronic speed control and reversing switch). Went to bed.

Cheers

I feel so unclean, the late lamented's body is still warm and here I am playing with my new "Predator" drill with two batteries and a variety of other goodies, purchased from Placemakers for $38.95 in their Labour Day sale.
