672658 2009-03-17 23:30:00 No software is perfect, to use your analogy
It doesn't make them "crapware" either which is what I have an issue with.

672659 2009-03-18 00:23:00 OK the term "crapware" may have been a little harsh.

I think the only reason MYOB, Norton, Windows etc have the market share they do is great advertising, and not for being the best at what they say they do.

Long shot, where is support for NZA Gold?
Rob99 (151)
672660 2009-03-22 12:00:00 NZA Gold is a sunset product, support ceased about 4 years ago now.
Aurora One was sunset late last year, around December.

672661 2009-03-22 20:08:00 Aurora One = MYOB (web-enabled)

Cashbook Complete FTW!

Agree with Rob99 about the reason for MYOB's popularity - they have a good marketing department!

672662 2009-05-01 07:36:00 As an accounting professional, I use many accounting packages, in my view MYOB is a competent product, although I do not always recommend it to clients as in some cases there are more suitable alternatives to individual business needs .

For example, in my opinion the inventory and payroll modules are weak and using MYOB Premier in a multi-user environment seems to cause many issues, especially with speed & data reliability . I just checked my records relating to corrupt data files that required repair by MYOB, in every case the corrupt data file originated from a Premier multi-user environment .

I also have some major reservations about the total cost of ownership with MYOB, due what I consider is excessive annual support charges .

Please note, my comments refer to MYOB Accounting, Premier and AccountEdge .

I do consider their RetailManager software a poorly designed, buggy piece of crapware when trying to use it with serial numbers .

672663 2009-05-01 08:21:00 There is a common trend among my clients regarding MYOB - those who use it over a network are not impressed, and those who only use it on a single PC think it is great. I prefer quickbooks for a multi-user environment.

What does everyone else use? Every program has problems, but I am interested to know if there are any viable alternatives to the main 2?

672664 2009-05-01 13:45:00 I just work with what my client already has, accounting is not my game.

For a small business you cant go past Cash Book Complete.

To get around having to put in a terminal server for a small company that has been sucked into MYOB and cannot justify that cost I use xpunlimited, this will turn xp or vista into a terminal server, and that computer can still be used.

Retail Manager is good at what it does and a very powerful inventory management system.
However I totally agree with you on the registration/confirmation of the product, if you think you have headaches try talking a computer illiterate shop monkey through the process, then you will know what a headache is.
Sooner this aspect of the software is redesigned the better.

The official line for Premier is it should handle about 8 simultaneous users. The reality is it can handle 3 or 4, Enterprise on a terminal server can handle as many as the server can handle. Enterprise does it what it does very well bit Premier is lagging behind in that regard.
There are plans in the works to correct this problem in Premier but its not a easy thing to do as the database structure behind it is getting a bit old now.
So if you can't do what you want with the current database structure what do you do?
You replace it, which is part of what is being done now.

672666 2009-05-01 14:44:00 I was too slow for another edit, forgive the double post.

Why do you think the cost is excessive? Let me break it down for you.
For a start support is optional (excepting Retail Manager) you do not have to sign an agreement.
Support costs about $380 for 12 months.

Phone and email support within business hours, as much as you need/want
10% discount on all training courses
Volumetric discount on company data files and user licenses
All releases made in the 12month period of the support. There are in most cases at least one major release (not counting patches) within a 12month support period, these sell for $400 approx so effectively you get this for free

Support looks like a good deal to me.

672667 2009-05-05 05:20:00 As much as I don't want my 1st post to be a rant, sorry there will be a small element of it . I'm sure you'll understand why . The below will also explain why I'm here .

Had MYOB Accounting V4 for many years and while it has issues we came up with some handy work-a-rounds . The downside was the numbers when sussing the reports were always so wrong the reports were useless . We were only a 2 man outfit at the start and have grown since . We had that version running on a 5 machine network and it was 99 . 5% of the time, sweet as . We didn't sign up for the expensive Support and the few issues we had we sorted out ourselves . NB: we struggle to even spell computer but seem to do 'trial and error' very well .

At Xmas we decided we needed far better stock control than what V4 can do, it is only very basic and lacking in many areas . So we went sussing to see what was out there . We did like EXO but after trialling it and all that the cost that we were told as approx . $7500 suddenly jumped to around 20K once we said lets do the deal . Masses of 'implementation and other untold of costs' and what's more a large on going and compulsory support cost . A shame as we did really like that product but as they couldn't come up with a valid reason for the on going rent, we passed on that one . They really should be honest and just call it 'ongoing revenue stream' rather than support .

So thinking an upgrade would mean better faster issues sorted we went to Premier 12 . What a cock-up of the 1st order . 1st there was that whole MAPI drama, which MYOB seem to have their heads in the sand over . 'Not our problem' they told us . Sorry but one quick google shows it as being a very well known problem to the point Microsoft have a whole page devoted to just that issue . But we fixed that by installing some 2002 vintage software .

Since then one drama after another . The most common being 'terminated' 4 -5 times a day which can only be sorted by a complete crash of and reopening of MYOB . In between the multiple terminations at least one user gets chucked out . 'Unstable' isn't a word I knew before installing Prem 12 .

I asked a mate who's the boss of a large mutli-national big name software outfit for help to see if it was our hardware . I knew something was not looking good as soon as he started laughing when I told him we had gone to Premier . Our hardware is fine, very fast and well above the MYOB minimum recommendations .

As for the MYOB Support, shocker . Pay them a pile of money and all they do is read the knowledge base to you over the phone . It's a simple double entry accounting thing and you shouldn't need to pay such a huge sum in Support .

As I'm a nosey bugger I did some looking around only to find the majority of MYOBs income is from Support charges . It's no wonder there are many issues in MYOB products, if there wasn't they would have no income . I'll not go as far to suggest the issues are built in or left there on purpose but that has crossed my mind . And what's more I'm surprised at the number of other places with the same MYOB issues as us .

So now as MYOB has absolutely no desire to help us get the sytem working let alone keep it working, I'm looking for something else . A sad thing to say only 4 weeks after installing it but I'm well over the rubbish we are having to contend with now .

I'm guessing DeSade works for MYOB, which is fine, we all have to work somewhere but I'm sorry I can't follow the logic in the 'as 85% use it, it must be good' theory . More McDonald burgers are sold than anyone else but does that make then good? Nope . What you'll find is as MYOB has brought out all of it's competition (and then closed them down) people have bugger all choice so MYOB have a lot purely by default .

So what do I replace MYOB with?
We have stock so something that can handle inventory is needed . Worst case we are going back to V4 but one way or another Premier is outta here . I'm sorry to say but a new word I've only just run across does describe Premier rather well, that word is 'crapware' .

Any help would be appreciated .
