2008-05-30 07:43:00 | My problem for today is: A friend gave me a 'something' homemade disc with VCD files on it. I converted this to mpeg1 files and recorded it in Nero Express 6.6.1.4 successfully (success means that I can now play it on our DVD player, on Nero Showtime and Windows Media Player on my lappy & desktop). :) However, it 'plays', but only audio, no video, on my friends lappy (in spite of the fact that I updated her Windows Media Player to version 11). :( It plays happily on Nero Showtime on her lappy. Any ideas for a 'fix'? I have a reputation to keep up here! As always - TIA Cheers R.M.

2008-05-30 09:22:00 | Seems something like a specific video codec absent on your friend's PC but present on yours. What program did you use to convert to mpeg1? Perhaps the codecs/files required might be required to play it also, in WMA on your friends PC... | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2008-05-30 11:41:00 | Sounds like a codec or video settings/driver issue: try checking the file to find out which video codec it's using with GSpot (www.headbands.com) It will also tell you if you have a suitable decoder installed. If it thinks you should be able to play the file fine then it could be your video settings etc

2008-06-01 01:20:00 | I've had no success in fixing this. I put some codecs I found on my 'puter on -didn't help. Tried GSpot - couldn't manage that either! I'm not having a good day. :badpc:

I don't use Windows Media Player for anything, never have been a fan of it. Maybe install K-Lite codec pack might solve the viewing problem. www.free-codecs.com |

2008-06-01 02:26:00 | Likely v11 has bollixed it up by reassigning it a file extension that only WMP11 can use . Kinda like the ol' Sony Rootkit problem . It's a great big pain in the rear if you "update to" and use WMP11, but somehow nobody listens to me . I dumped v11, went back to v10 and haven't had a problem since . But . . there are others who will tell you just how great WMP11 is . Personally, I think it sux big ones . . and it is not worth letting Bill know that you are playing rips and other than signed DVDs on your system . Even personal vids of grandma taking out her false teeth are verboten and won't play once WMP11 gets a hold of them . In the US for the next few weeks, we can rip copies of DVDs and such for proprietary reasons and archives if we actually can hold, touch or see the stuff we copy . We have to have the original in our possession and then it's legal to make copies . . . . but that's gonna change soon and be like NZ . WMP works fine, and it's the only video/audio player I use .
