673839 2008-05-30 07:23:00 I have a laptop that is running low on storage space and was wondering if you can get an external HDD that doesn't need to run on power. If there isn't I'll just get one anyway. Thanks. Craig Mellor (13762)
673840 2008-05-30 07:28:00 Most 2.5" external drives draw there power from the USB port. stormdragon (6013)
673841 2008-05-30 07:28:00 Yes the ones that take laptop hard drives (2.5"). Only take power through the USB gary67 (56)
673842 2008-05-30 07:31:00 Thats good, what brands? Craig Mellor (13762)
673843 2008-05-30 07:34:00 Depends do you want a presealed package with a drive in an enclosure, or would you rather buy an enclosure and a drive and install them yourself?

Seagate are good for the Hard Drive.

Welland make good enclosures.

673844 2008-05-30 07:35:00 Pre-sealed because then I know it works. Craig Mellor (13762)
673845 2008-05-30 09:02:00 another thing to look out for is the USB connector, you want a standard mini connector on the case, its a real pain in the ass if you loose the cable and its non standard. you can never find them! rileyz (13800)
673846 2008-05-30 12:37:00 Pre-sealed because then I know it works.

Can't go wrong with Seagate.

673847 2008-05-30 21:20:00 Just get a Seagate and an enclosure, that way you know for sure what brand hard drive is in it, and you'll get the 5 yr warranty.

Pre-sealed could be anything...........
