396876 2005-10-17 00:18:00 A Microsoft patch meant to fix critical security flaws in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is causing trouble for some users, the company said Friday.

The patch was released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days. The flaw, tagged "critical" by Microsoft, lies in a Windows component for transaction processing called the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.

Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said.

396879 2005-10-17 02:26:00 I think its hilarious. I can just see users all over the place discovering Windows is munted. Oh what to do? Reinstall. Oh and then, because we are such good little safety concious people, better get all the updates again. Ooops. Windows is munted... pctek (84)
396880 2005-10-17 03:27:00 cant see that 'fix' being much use it assumes you can get into windoze ? guess the old 'repair install' again..................sigh...... drcspy (146)

You want secure computing? Can't get much more secure than that.

396882 2005-10-17 03:38:00 Got all 9 . . yes! 9! updates from M$ Last Tuesday, and contrary to folk tales, it's all working well and clean . Sorry to burst _inux bubbles, but XP works just fine . . if one follows the updates and gets SP-2 in at the very beginning of the install .

I am writing this response on a supposedly broken XP machine with the new updates . . . can anyone see anything wrong with it?

Gads, I get tired of the M$ bashing/bashers here . . . can't we all just get along?

Looks pretty much like how the average user has their Windows set up anyhow . . . . .

396885 2005-10-17 03:51:00 Joe.. the original post said that the latest patch has caused problems for some users not all, not even the majority. I will also note that the pctek uses 'doze as Linux does not give the required game support.

Every OS has it's problems, none are perfect, and having a laugh at patch folly is not automaticly showing any bias between one OS or another. I'd laugh just as much about a Linux patch that behaved that badly for "some users" and indeed, allthough i haven't met such a patch, it would be of no surprise to find there is, or was a similar stuff-up in *nix world.
