396285 2005-10-18 01:36:00 Take no notice of white_lightning, he's a Jehovah's Witness (I can spot their mad ramblings a mile off) and as such he's at the extreme end of blind faith following religious nuttiness.

Talking to JW's is like bashing your head against a brick wall. They gave up thinking a long time ago. In fact they are taught that "independant thinking" is a sin and they should only think about stuff the Watchtower Society (their parent org.) has taught them. Everything else is from Satan.

396286 2005-10-18 01:46:00 I liked it. As far as organs of man/the universe go, there is nothing that I know of in the theory of evolution precludes a creator of some kind, or with the big bang theory.

In one of my physics lectures (this was a while ago now and a bit hazy) I'm sure we were told that according to the Big Bang Theory that the big bang doesn’t measure the start of the universe, just the point at which we can start measuring it.

Exactly. You can have evolution and God at the same time, no problem. The early part of the Bible is an allegory written for simple illiterate people, to get basic concepts across. It isn't meant to be read literally.

And the Big Bang - all quantum models break down before Planck Time, which is the earliest point we can calculate the explosion operating.

There are theories about the origin of the Bang. It may have been a collapsed Omega Point of an earlier Universe. Or our Universe curved around on itself in the early days and created itself. Or that the whole lot is the product of a probability wave. Take your pick. :D

396287 2005-10-18 01:49:00 Having a personal belief in God/Allah/etc has a benefit for the individual and society . Most of us have a moral code (conscience) which forbids lying, cheating, and harming others . We may fall down at times but at least try .

The benefit of believing in an omniscient God is that s/he knows what you are doing at all times . Thus when you are tempted to tell a lie or steal something, knowing you won't get caught, nevertheless you also know that God can see this . And you'll know that you have done wrong .

Thus your actions are continually tested against your conscience . This leads to better behaviour both in the personal sense and the community sense .

It is argued that the "breakdown" of society is because young people have not learned to develop a conscience . Religions in all societies present a set of rules which help develop a conscience .

The trouble with this Winston is that it implies that someone who does not believe in God does not have conscience .

I believe that all humans have a conscience inherently . It can be trained and developed to varying degrees but to say that you don't have one without religion is not correct IMO .

396288 2005-10-18 01:51:00 Easy. The last book in the bible was written in 96CE. The first way back in 1513 BCE. No other book has lasted this long. The time from the last book till now is over 1,900 years. It is the most famous book and the most selling one. The fact that it was lasted all these years and hasn;t died out is testimony for it being inspired by God and beneficial for us.So what your saying is that because the bible is the oldest book, or oldest collection of books known to you it MUST be true and written by God?

I'm afraid that only proves to me that it is an old collection of books.

As for the commercial popularity argument........................

396289 2005-10-18 01:58:00 The bible was handwritten by man obviously . But everything in it was written by God himself .

Do we not see a certain non sequitur here? Or has blind faith overtaken reason .

Does not anybody know the sordid and corrupt history of the various versions and translations (I use that word loosely, cross-language interpretations would be more accurate) of the bible(s) .

Whatever your god dictated (or didn't, perhaps, but accepting your view for the sake of the theological debate) was open to the interpretation of man, and the centuries of religious violence, massacres, atrocities and genocide in his name are testament to that .

Blind faith is the ultimate expression of an inferiority complex so deeply rooted that the individual or group cannot function without a crutch . It is a sign of the ultimate lack of faith .

Of course I could be wrong, in which case I guess I will be struck down the moment I sign off .

Cheers

Nope, still here .

Yep, checked, still breathing .

Hmmm . . . . . Perhaps I'd better lie down .

Or stand up . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What i find hard to believe is how you can critisise a religion when you haven't gone and found out the true facts. These days, eveyone critisises Jehovah's Witnesses because of lies of many people. Jehovah's Witnesses teachings are from the bible. Stop critisising them just because they have strong faith. Do your research before making accusations. If your too lazy to, don't bother making a comment at all.

I'm not a Jehovah's Witness yet. I was a Christian, but left that way of life because of all the hypocrasy i see these days. Jehovah's Witnesses are the only ones who read and ACTUALLY follow the bible. Why blaspheme against the Witnesses when they actually do good and are not false in their ways.

While i want to answer more on this topic, im going to refrain as some people just cannot be sensible. If you want to know more, PM me.

396291 2005-10-18 03:01:00 I know a good deal more about JW's than you buddy . Don't accuse me of not knowing the true facts . I grew up in a JW home and worked up thru the ranks of the religion . I can tell you from firsthand experience they are NOT Christian . They are evil, deceitful, lying, bastards . Hypocrisy will take on a whole new meaning once you get involved with them .

As for following the bible, what a joke . They follow the Watchtower Society, who's ever changing teachings frequently contradict the bible .

Like any religion, many of the rank & file members are good people but they are deceived by their corrupt leaders . JW's may have strong faith, but it's blind faith . Blind to the lies of their leaders .

I only hope you have the good sense to GET OUT before you become too deeply involved .

396292 2005-10-18 03:25:00 Hey, why don't you all try a little doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. Try discussing. Sharing your views in a mature manner. Agreeing to differ while respecting each others' right to hold an opinion. That kind of thing. Don't make me bring the wrath of Bruce down on you all. I just feel like unleashing a plague, or doing a bit of smiting. Haven't smited in along time. Biggles (121)
396293 2005-10-18 03:39:00 But Bruce, this is all just good fun, an expression of differering opinions on a contriversial issue!

Surely no-ones getting all upset and taking it personally? :horrified

396294 2005-10-18 03:57:00 We are all arguing a no win/no lose argument here . You wont find out if you're right or wrong till you die .

The only downside for the god-botherers here is that if you're wrong you've basically missed out on all the fun in life .

The thought of Jebus sending everybody to hell after his hugs and kisses approach doesn't really hold water anyhow .

Life's short, go hard or go to church .
