| 673892 | 2008-05-31 08:56:00 | Slow windows startup? its looking for the network perhaps? other slowdown problems are often caused by DMA issues or a glitch involving windows update causing the cpu to use %99 usage. Do a control alt delete once desktop is up? |

| 673894 | 2008-05-31 21:32:00 | OK, she's got 1G RAM (jwil1 - the second suggestion worked). I also checked Windows Update - not ticked, not running.(Apsattv) I've got this funny feeling (and I told her so) that she should take it to her school tech and request : a reformat and reload of WinXP (I think it's not Word, it's XP that's buggered) update to SP3 Wainuitech - tried the CP suggestions, did not fix it. The problem - up until say 2-3 days ago everything happened quite fast - XP starting, Word documents opening, etc. Now, all of a sudden the major change. Maybe I should check usage of CPU (if I can) and see which programs are running, and if they're running all the time? sarel |

| 673895 | 2008-06-02 20:47:00 | Report back time. SWMBO agreed to use the Winword /a command to open all Word doccies and it solved a major problem for her, namely the speed of opening Word documents. She will be talking to the school techie today about a reformat (and she's spitting tacks, so I don't want to be in his shoes.) SWMBO asked me to convey her sincere thanks to everybody who tried to help out. Thanks guys and gals. sarel |
