| 397337 | 2005-10-20 18:07:00 | im in the process of changing over now, i have contemplated it for months and got my telecom bill yesterday for $60 when i could have 100x better on ihug for cheaper, i had no idea they had changed their pricing and speeds tho I agree with ya there...I'm also thinking of moving too. my $70 on the Telecom plan is not worth it compares to the ihug... |

The only reason why most broadband plans are stuck at 128K upload speed, is because Telecom doesn't want everybody using broadband for cheap phone calls. Until Telecom loses its control of the phone line system, broadband upload speeds are going to stay "crappy". In fact, the majority of New Zealand's broadband plans are DSL based, and since Telecom controls all the copper that DSL runs on, what they say goes, in terms of pricing. |

The internet may be seen as cheap but it's not efficient for phone calls. The existing system works perfectly well with 64k or less in each direction. |

| 397343 | 2005-10-24 06:12:00 | I've been downloading around 150MB everyday so . It takes 24 hours for me to download 150mb since im on dialup . I just let it download while I do study or when i head off to bed . Even thought ihug lowered its prices . I still won't consider as I would like a plan with flatrate just like dialup . The new prices doesn't seem very appealing . I was hoping there would be a 2mbps flat rate Still so expensive compared to overseas . . . Im on orcon dialup and I'll use the 256k flat rate next year . Keep in mind if you are you are hogging a landline with that dialup modem . If you have 2 landlines to compensate it may be about the same price to go broadband (as it shares just the 1 line with your voice) . To be honest I DL a lot of demo (cough) movies and games . 40 gig is really enough at the moment, otherwise you just end up DL crap . I suppose if you want to download full DVD 4gig demo movies (cough), then 40 gig may not be enough, but the DVD rips are such good quaility these days, I have no huge urge to do that . |

Thats only half of it the 2nd half is because Telecom network will not be able to cope with the xtra load it would get . |

| 397346 | 2005-10-24 19:57:00 | Does anybody have that site that shows the current load of the southern-cross cabling? I doubt that.. They have bandwidth to burn!!! If they capped it somewhere more reasonably at like 50gigs, 2mbps down, even 256kbps upload would be a start! Phone Calls are fine. Ive had conversations on Dial-Up using Skype. Current ADSL plans are more than enough for good quality :) Can somebody tell me about the GoogleTalk quality? Ive heard its quite good, however Im not using the official client so cant tell :( |
