2008-05-30 21:19:00 | It's not just Word that is slow, Windows took about 5 mins to startup. There are about 20+ normal.dot files in various locations The AV looks ok, no obvious ticks except for the CD-drive (MT at this stage) Winword /a = immediate action OK, have to post this now to safe boot. sarel

2008-05-30 21:39:00 | could not start up in Safe mode - asks for login and password to log onto the network (school) and it does not accept it. Also - apparently I can't change too much in the sense of taking school stuff out - the school's computer techs may get peeved off The slowness only started to happen the last few days. SWMBO said last night, for a short while, she could open docs fast (did nothing different) and then it reverted back to sloooooooooow. Still can't open Control Panel (clicking on it just give me a flicker of the hourglass) and nothing happens sarel

2008-05-30 21:43:00 | It probably needs to be connected to the school network for the username / password to work. Since its on a domain. And I doubt you're on a domain at home

2008-05-30 22:49:00 | Regarding the previous post - it's the same login I get when I start the lappie normally - but it's just that in Safe mode it does not work sarel

2008-05-30 22:54:00 | also : when trying to open a word document or IE, it just hangs - and when trying to close it you just get the familiar "not responding" message. Retrying may result in success (sometimes). sarel

2008-05-30 22:59:00 | What if you right mouse on my computer on the desktop (if its there) / properties. General tab. How much ram does it say here? | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-05-31 00:28:00 | The problem with the Control panel, from what I have read could be the .cpl files are damaged - have a look at This Page from MS (support.microsoft.com) - I have just looked on this PC, and the .cpl's are in C:\windows\system32 To locate them I did a search for *.cpl , in the search options All files and Folders. then under look in, Down the Bottom (www.imagef1.net.nz) click browse, and navigate to the system 32 folder, I found 27 - then followed the MS instructions on removing, they did replace instantly once removed. Also found These instructions / suggestion (www.techsupportforum.com) - No idea if it works - as i cant replicate the problem.

2008-05-31 02:26:00 | To see how much ram it has try: -Opening Task Mgr>Performance and looking under Total on the right -Opening Start>Run>msinfo32.exe -Opening Word>Help>About>System Info (opens msinfo32.exe) -Or download a system info tool (eg Everest or Aida32)

2008-05-31 05:48:00 | I see that its on IE6, maybe she should consider changing it to IE7 :p. Funtions are basically the same, but it does have slightly better security on XP, and besides, its got tabs :) There is an add on for it called IEPro if she wants any more features. | SPARTAN 860 (2618) | |
