673733 2008-05-30 05:26:00 Never seen anything like this before . My suspicion is a compatibility problem with the non-HP PSUs . I will test by replacing my PCs PSU with a Hyena Just to follow up what I wrote before - I personally have installed maybe 7-8 Hyena's in HP/ Compaq's only because the customers didn't want to fork out more money for the older PC's .

Only had trouble from 1 old HP running win98 (from memory - and thats a few years back) and that was because it required the additional power connector that HP PSU had .

Normally if the PSU is going to cause a conflict it will do it almost right away, not a week later . The usual "trick" that HP do is make it so a standard PSU wont quite fit the case, they want you to purchase one of theirs - at a over inflated price . :annoyed: :groan:

Just a thought - someone on the site is not doing something that is causing the failures, like plugging in something thats not meant to be plugged in ?

Also, when these fail does it trip the overload on the UPS (s)?

673734 2008-05-30 05:31:00 Are the PCs drawing more power than the PSU can handle? jwil1 (65)

That was gonna be my next question as Hyena PSUs may say they are 350W but it's probably more likely to be 200W

673736 2008-05-30 09:10:00 could be a sh*t psu like the others say, get a decdent one to test with if you have the cash to spare. also are you getting the proper power rating for it? i asssume so. lastley check with hp for known problems (last call, there a pain in the ass if your not a hp enginner, call the HP national number not a reseller as they will know), i used to be a HP enginner and it does happen with bad batches. check the serial numbers to see if there in the same range. if you ring hp you will need the s/n and p/n.

i agree you should be able to use a non HP spare part and it should work fine tho!

one more thing, i have seen **** psu pop off from thermal over load, but it sounds like yours is dieing completly.

good luck!

I find they usually make differences felt with a nice plume of magic smoke :D sometimes fireworks too!

More like 1 watt at the most

it would be interesting to examine the dead PSUs to find out what is blowing.. maybe that would throw some light onto the cause...
