397666	2005-10-19 09:52:00	Air New Zealand had and I presume still has world class jet engine repair and maintenance workshops. Jets from all over the Pacific region came to NZ for work. Unfortunately that work has dropped away. Airlines are preferring Asian engineering facilities which are cheaper and no less competent. Bummer. I agree with Terry that breaking up a specialised team of engineers is a crying shame. But they have to eat - and if the work isn't there................what other choice does Air NZ have? 397669	2005-10-19 20:25:00	The "Should we change our flag" debate was a waste of time as "we" aren't going to get a say in the matter Our flag will eventually be changed to something else and it won't be by "New Zealanders" who will, in the not too distant future be known as "New Asians" and "New Zealand will become a republic with a new name probably along the lines of something like "New Asia" or "Asia Minor" I can't keep count of the number of New Zealand business large and small that have moved offshore over the recent few years citing cheaper labour etc. I for one don't want an aircraft I'm in serviced in foreign parts by who knows who, I want it serviced by properly trained Kiwis who care. Not only are we letting far too many immigrants that have no intention of integrating into NZ's way of life into the country but we are supplying their countries with jobs by the thousand every month It's a slow & methodical takeover of our country and we're all guilty of letting it happen. Within 30years NZ won't be NZ anymore, it will become an overcrowded, dirty, 3rd world slum at the bottom end of the Pacific. I for one hope I'm dead when this happens, but I fear for my childrens future as it will be nothing like my past and for that I'm very sad. I'm not a zealot, I have no particular religious or political agendas, I'm just an ordinary Kiwi who fears for this great country and it's all happening in the name of the mighty dollar. Surely there is more to quality of life than money. I'm pissed off. My wife and I have been talking over the last few months about moving to Australia, this might just make our minds up for us. I've had a gutsful of this place and don't like living here anymore. The last bit of your rant demonstrates how little you understand life in Australia - if those are the things that piss you off in NZ you'll get double your rubbish in Oz.	d.murray (276)
397670	2005-10-19 20:27:00	This is all part of getting ready to sell AirNZ to Qantas, etc. and make it attractive to a buyer. Make is look good ... new uniforms, new planes. Make it efficient ... reduce costs, cut staff. It will happen, it is just that the spin-doctors have worked out how to seel it to the people. Air NZ has a fleet of aircraft which currently requires a major refit and regular heavy maintenance . Quote from a union rep . Their immediate goal will be to try to negotiate retention of a contract to strip back and refit the airline's eight Boeing 747s at $20 million a plane, assuring them of another nine months' or so work . If work from other airlines has dropped away then some staff cut backs would be expected but the majority of the staff are employed to maintain their own aircraft and what Air NZ is planning to do is outsource the heavy maintenance for most of its fleet and as a result cut staff numbers . There may be some cost savings to the airline but they are making a good profit and have money in the bank and it is typical that experienced loyal staff are not considered when accountants and consultants are let loose on a company with their grand plans which frequently have to be reversed at a later date when they find it was not a good idea after all . Air NZ has always done major maintenance on its own aircraft and still managed to make healthy profits and the decision to change this can only be regarded as strange and even politically motivated considering the places that are being considered for the work . I believe Air NZ has actually turned down work from other airlines recently and the reasons for that can only be regarded as suspicious in light of the recent announcement . I like their timing about a decision on Dec 19 - nice Xmas present . Not the first time major staff decisions have been taken at that time of the year .	Safari (3993)

[rant2] I understand life in Australia very well thankyou. My job requires that I spend quite a bit of time in Australia each year on business and in fact am heading there for 3 weeks work in a couple of days. My feelings are NZ is fast becoming "Not the NZ I know and grew up in" I feel all the changes over the last 10 years or so has left me feeling "it's not home anymore" and it's only going to get worse, so why stay here. I can enjoy more money, better weather and a better lifestyle in Australia. My wife and I are at the stage in life where the kids are almost off our hands so we are free to do as we please. My brother and sister moved to Australia 20 years ago and both have lifestyles far superior to ours here in NZ. True they went there when it was the land of milk and honey and things have certainly changed I don't really care how Australia is structured socially or economically it's not my country so have no particular alliegance to it and have no right to judge. But if I can spend the last 20-30yrs of my life enjoying a better lifestyle there than in my own country, then so be it. I don't like what is going on in NZ and don't want to hang around and watch it Maybe I'm having a midlife crisis, I dunno But if I am, I'm not alone, many I talk to are sad at the way NZ is heading and some of them are also contemplating their own families futures here.	bartsdadhomer (80)

Yes, I'm sufficently doubtful of Air's management to think you are right . We've seen it before, large companies dumping/selling off specialised areas of work only to discover years later that the knowledge and staff were fundamental to the business .	Winston001 (3612)
