396887 2005-10-17 04:33:00 I could go for a Linux but this OS is still hard for me...maybe I'm more addicted to MS. Well, I haven't update my windows since last month....may go and dot it tonite. Mr Wetzyl (362)
396888 2005-10-17 04:48:00 I'd laugh just as much about a Linux patch that behaved that badly for "some users" and indeed, allthough i haven't met such a patch, it would be of no surprise to find there is, or was a similar stuff-up in *nix world. There was the recent infamous KDE web-collage screensaver which was set as default in Fedora and Debian. This screensaver downloads random images it finds on the internet to display as screensaver images. Now, what do you think makes up the bulk of images on the internet .... - Result of default screensaver (bugzilla.redhat.com) and here (bugs.debian.org) Jen (38)
396889 2005-10-17 06:28:00 the latest patch has caused problems for some users not all, not even the majority. I will also note that the pctek uses 'doze as Linux does not give the required game support.
having a laugh at patch folly is not automaticly showing any bias between one OS or another.
Yep, sure do. And yep, having a laugh.
Although it would be rather nasty for someone who did get the problem. A few red faces at MS headquarters perhaps?
And no, I don't have auto updates turned on, for this very reason, much prefer to fix it when its broken rather than before.
There was another article about car software too - having the thing completely die on you and having to get the garage to re-do the software. Hmmm, maybe they're running Windows.... :D

396890 2005-10-17 06:43:00 My brothers spanking new Falcon would constantly just die, refuse to start unless left alone for a few hours.

After that it would start but do no more then 15km/h, we had a few long days getting it back to Wanganui.

Ford mechanics could find nothing wrong, The fix was to reset the computer. When pressed they would state that they had downloaded and installed the latest software from Ford.

A couple weeks later it would die again.

$45 grands worth of wagon and it was traded back to them before its first birthday.

In another case I had a Bobcat break down, the steering linkages had collapsed, Bobcat service man was called in, He plugged his rinky dinky computer into the onboard computer, downloaded all the error codes, then proud as punch informed me I was wrong and there was nothing wrong with it.

I told the smug little **** to take it for a drive, he did so, then full of scorn told me there was still nothing wrong with it and I would be billed for wasting his time.....

As is to be expected I roared at him and booted him off the site, Upon calling the agency to tell them to never send the half-wit back I was informed that the 6 week course they sent him on consisted of nothing but classroom work on using a computer diagnostic program, seems in there world they had forgotten that bolts can come loose.....

396891 2005-10-17 07:24:00 Some of us that run a reasonable anti-virus and reasonable firewall, both non MS, never update. Why don't we ever get affected by security scares? Greg (193)

What's all the fuss about? Some people would pay good money for that little 'bug'. Boy- I bet a few eyes bulged in Linux Land when they came back from teir 'afternoon cuppa'. Me thinks it was just a cunning stunt to get people to switch OS to one that 'sources openly on the internet' :nerd:

396893 2005-10-17 07:36:00 Yeah and Metla, I once had a mechanic tell me that they can't fix Subarus because they are computer controlled (***?). I did nae go back there. Shortcircuit (1666)
