673871 2008-05-30 07:28:00 SWMBO asked me tonight to look at her lappie, it's so slow. Takes 5-10 mins to open a standard 2 page word document. Toshiba, XP, got masses of HD free, and RAM = ?, because when I asked her to open Control Panel - System, the folder just gave a flicker and did not want to open. Other folder in CP opens. I also had her run a viruscheck with her school AV - clean (Comp Asso.).

Any initial ideas? I know you're gonna say HijackThis - but then would you guys know what is school stuff and what not?

673872 2008-05-30 07:36:00 Well of course we'll know what school stuff is.

Whatever doesnt look like malware, if its got malware on it

What version of Windows is on it, I would check and see how much ram is installed as well

673873 2008-05-30 08:54:00 Could be excess temporary word files and/or corrupt word template/software (as described here (wordtips.vitalnews.com)) in addition to the usual (insufficient ram, malware, surplus files, etc)

If pc is slow only in opening word, then likely there is a corrupt normal.dot template (I have seen this with a student at a training course). He had to reinstall Microsoft office...

673874 2008-05-30 09:30:00 Hey guys, I have to do the HIjackThis, etc tomorrow - she's got an ERO visit next week and told me to b*gger off for now but I know I can get my grubby paws on her lappie tomorrow.

673875 2008-05-30 10:13:00 If pc is slow only in opening word, then likely there is a corrupt normal.dot template (I have seen this with a student at a training course). He had to reinstall Microsoft office...
If its only a damaged normal.dot, then theres an easy way to replace it.

Go to search, include hidden files and folders, search for Normal.dot, when you locate it rename it to Normal.old, you usually get a warning about not working - just agree. Next open Word, it will then automatically recreate a New Normal.dot.

Also another thing you can try is opening word with out any "extras" go to start/run type in winword /a <Enter> Word should open in less than two seconds - If it works OK with the command the problem is explained best from this:
Using the /A switch in Word 2002 or Word 2003 keeps add-ins and attached templates, among other things, from loading when you start Word.

Just a thought - look at the AV as well, Comp Asso, look in the setting to make sure its not scanning the documents as they open, that can really put on the breaks - I know Nortons can do that scan, not to sure about Comp Asso

673876 2008-05-30 10:31:00 Thanks Wainuitech...I do recall the winword /a shortcut (forgot to mention), as it bypasses several word functions... kahawai chaser (3545)
673877 2008-05-30 10:49:00 That may explain / then be able to sort out the word Problem - only time will tell. - If not then something else needs to be tried.

I do what you said all the time as well ( forgot to mention) - "Oh yeah, forgot about that" until someone else mentions a fix/suggestion

673878 2008-05-30 20:57:00 OK, I'm working on the suggestions from the top:

I will report back on the other stuff as I go on (*rubbing paws gleefully - remember the cr*p I caused a year or so ago, have been permanently banned ever since*)

673879 2008-05-30 21:06:00 akes 5-10 mins to open a standard 2 page word document. Toshiba, XP, RAM = ?,

I'll leave the HJT for speedy.......

But theres loads of stuff in the startup, do msconfig and cut it down.

Boot into safe mode and check the RAM, should be at least 512mb.

How old is this thing?

the 3 causes of slow:

1) Not enough RAM (and how much depends on the o/s)

2)Malware

3)Windows bloat

The last - you can tidy it up, use things like CCleaner etc, which can help but sometimes if its over 2 years old, a clean install is sometimes best.

CCleaners and so on never get all the accumulated clutter.
pctek (84)
673880 2008-05-30 21:14:00 Looks ok to me but put HJT in its own folder then run it tick these. Then tick fix checked

How much ram is in it?

Most of the entries in startup look like theyre for the school. And the domain entries are also for the school. So should stay there
