397655 2005-10-19 06:05:00 So what do people think of Air New Zealand, in the same week, introducing nice new fashionable (read expensive) uniforms while at the same time plotting the trimming of 600 odd jobs. Included in these job losses are engineers and maintenance staff according to the news.

I had to shake my head when the company announced that its new soon-to-be-purchased aircraft required very little maintenace.

I can just imagine it...

'Wow! The view from 30,000 feet is spectacular and by the way, that's a pretty flash uniform, but excuse me, did that engine just fall off?'

How can they justify laying off 600 staff? I thought they were making a profit now? Or have I gotten the facts completely wrong?

397656 2005-10-19 06:09:00 I can understand its expensive to fly a plane all the way back home for maintenece, But was disgusted at the comment that new planes are maintenence free, A comment that shows their arrogance.

If they can't support the people of NZ then they can expect the same in responce, I won't be using them again.

397657 2005-10-19 06:33:00 The "Should we change our flag" debate was a waste of time as "we" aren't going to get a say in the matter
Our flag will eventually be changed to something else and it won't be by "New Zealanders" who will, in the not too distant future be known as "New Asians" and "New Zealand will become a republic with a new name probably along the lines of something like "New Asia" or "Asia Minor"

I can't keep count of the number of New Zealand business large and small that have moved offshore over the recent few years citing cheaper labour etc.

I for one don't want an aircraft I'm in serviced in foreign parts by who knows who, I want it serviced by properly trained Kiwis who care.

Not only are we letting far too many immigrants that have no intention of integrating into NZ's way of life into the country but we are supplying their countries with jobs by the thousand every month

It's a slow & methodical takeover of our country and we're all guilty of letting it happen.
Within 30years NZ won't be NZ anymore, it will become an overcrowded, dirty, 3rd world slum at the bottom end of the Pacific.

I for one hope I'm dead when this happens, but I fear for my childrens future as it will be nothing like my past and for that I'm very sad.

I'm not a zealot, I have no particular religious or political agendas, I'm just an ordinary Kiwi who fears for this great country and it's all happening in the name of the mighty dollar.
Surely there is more to quality of life than money.

I'm pissed off.

My wife and I have been talking over the last few months about moving to Australia, this might just make our minds up for us.
I've had a gutsful of this place and don't like living here anymore.

397658 2005-10-19 06:35:00 I thought we were supposed to have a knowledge economy, what ever happened to that idea? pine-o-cleen (2955)
397659 2005-10-19 06:42:00 I wonder who would have been handing out cabinet positions today if this had been released a month ago, I doubt it would have been Helen.
Makes you wonder why they waited till now to announce it, as I bet this had been decided months ago.
We spent a fortune in taxpayer $$ propping the damn airline up only to send another 600 jobs overseas
Unreal, thanks Helen.

397660 2005-10-19 06:44:00 Air New Zealand Engineering is a centre of excellence and skill . You just can't take people off the street and train them overnight to be aircraft engineers, either airframe or engine maintenance .

It's not like car mechanics or panel beating .

Once the teams have been disbanded, then say goodbye, and we have lost a strategic capability .

397661 2005-10-19 07:06:00 Bartsdadhomer, moving to Australia most likely won't get you an airline maintained by Australians much longer. From what the Air New Zealand spokesman on the radio was saying Qantas are reviewing their engineering operation as well. His comment was that even Qantas wasn't big enough to be able to go it alone. All the other customers for aircraft maintenance are going to the big European or Chinese operators.

At least things have improved from the days when the flying boats carried mechanics to change dropped valves and pistons during overnight stops.

397662 2005-10-19 07:09:00 So as the plane is plummeting downwards in a plume of smoke (because something on the "maintenance free" plane broke, at least you can take heart in the fact that the cabin crew are fashionably dressed. :D Mackin_NZ (6958)
397663 2005-10-19 07:18:00 I would love to know what went on behind the scenes to keep this out of the way till after the elections....?

It would make a good Tui billboard with a picture of Helen..

"We had no idea - yeah right."

397664 2005-10-19 08:40:00 Air New Zealand had and I presume still has world class jet engine repair and maintenance workshops. Jets from all over the Pacific region came to NZ for work.

Unfortunately that work has dropped away. Airlines are preferring Asian engineering facilities which are cheaper and no less competent. Bummer.

I agree with Terry that breaking up a specialised team of engineers is a crying shame. But they have to eat - and if the work isn't there................what other choice does Air NZ have?
