674774 2008-06-01 21:44:00 I’m trying to transfer files for a mate from his XP Desktop machine to his new Toshiba laptop.

As there is Gigabytes to deal with I hooked up an Ethernet cross over cable and named the computers etc and the computers both say they are connected at 100mbs.

Problem is, I can’t see any folders on the XP machine.

Yes I’ve turned on file sharing on the XP machine and have all the little hands showing but I’m darned if I can see anything on the Vista machine.

Oh, I’ve also turned off the firewalls but still nothing.

I’ve done this in the past successfully but this is my first encounter with Vista.

(Was it absolutely necessary to change everything around in Vista?) :groan:

674775 2008-06-02 01:43:00 Is the network in Vista set to Public or Private? By default, it's Public, and file sharing and PC discovery are switched off. Also, on every reboot of the Vista machine, if a crossover network is used, it resets itself back to Public.

Changing it is easy: Start, right-click Network, click Properties and click Customize. Select Private, and click Next.

Hope this helps :)

674776 2008-06-02 22:15:00 Thanks for the tip pcuserwinvista I wasn’t aware of that .

However, it didn’t fix the problem and what is happening is still not resolved . :crying

The present position is this:

I’m convinced that both computers are connected but not showing up .

So, after Googling for most of the day I found a post that reckoned the Computers Name was important . Into the XP Desktop I go and find the Computers Name was OURSI7T1456 or similar . Hmmm I think, I bet the computer was called OURS at the time of installation and XP has felt the need to add a few letters and numbers . Anyway, I change the Name back to OURS and lo and behold the Vista Laptop can see it . Beauty, so I exchange a lot of the files and all goes well .

Blow me down, I turn it on this morning and we’re back to square one .

So, back I go to the XP Computers name and change it to MINE .

Restart the XP computer and up it comes on the Vista Laptop as OURS .

Jeeeeeeez so off I go for breakfast to ponder the position and when I come back the Vista Notebook has gone into sleep mode and when I wake it OURS has gone .

Back to square one we go .

Struth, over the years I’ve used LPT1 crossover cables as well as Ethernet crossover cables and although they always caused heartache I’ve never struck anything like this .

Mind you this is my first encounter with Vista and I must say it’s been a memorable one for all the wrong reasons .

Any suggestions anyone as to what is happening? :crying

674777 2008-06-02 22:26:00 Have you checked to ensure that both PCs share the same workgroup name? The Vista and XP defaults are different. smokey (13809)

Yep, they're both named WORKGROUP.

The strange thing is they both claim to be connected at 100mbs.

I've even disconnected the cable and they have both recognised it was missing.

The annoying thing is once Vista catches onto the XP computer everything works fine.

It's as though Vista can see the XP Computer all the time but for some reason cant see the XP files. Then something happens and it's away and can see the files. Queer! :badpc:

674779 2008-06-03 01:40:00 Try getting the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) update for XP from Microsoft and install it on your Xp machine, see if that helps. Supposed to help Vista see XP's network. feersumendjinn (64)

Yep, I think you’ve nailed it .

From Googleing "Link-Layer Topology Discovery" it would seem literally 100’s have experienced exactly the same problem .

Anyway, I went onto the Microsoft Site on my computer, as the other XP machine is not connected to the internet and blow me down if Microsoft don’t want to validate the Microsoft Products on my machine, before I can use the patch . Well Mr $icrosoft, there is nothing illegal about my machine, I’m trying to fix someone else’s .

Obviously $icrosoft have stuffed up with Vista and a patch is required to make it work with XP, (even then the patch is for the XP machine) :groan: but they want check out my computer before parting with the patch .

I would have thought they would have been keen to fix the problem without making great issues out of it .

Anyone know how to get the patch without jumping through all the $icrosoft hoops?

And beware all you people with Networked XP computers if a Vista one gets added . ;)

674781 2008-06-03 02:39:00 It applies to everyone, not just you (that validation is required) for some (not all) MS downloads

All it does is check that you've got a legit version. If you have there's nothing to worry about

If its legit, it'll let you download it

Validation is also required for Office 2007, if you get the downloads manually

Thing is Speedy I don’t want it installed on my computer . I want it installed on another computer not connected to the Internet .

Personally, I’ve had Updates turned off on my computer ever since Windows Genuine Disadvantage started to muck me around and keep calling home . Computers never run better either .

At the end of the day I doubt $icrosoft have any value at all on their 514kb patch, it’s just another excuse to snoop and collect data .

In the meantime the mate can sit down with his 4gig Flash Drive and collect what files he wants that I haven’t already got . :D

:thanks everyone

674783 2008-06-03 04:07:00 Have you been to the windowsupdate site, with this computer and done a scan??

If you have, it's already installed anyway

The thing you're talking about (the notification program, which can be removed), isnt the same as what this site installs (genuine advantage tool), when it checks your key / for validation

Oh well, guess it'll have to be done the hard way :D
