674794 2008-06-01 20:48:00 So I've got two questions:

My first is about a connectivity issue. My PC is connected to a home network and sometimes (more often now, almost daily it seems) I loose my connection to the internet. But here's the thing, my computer still thinks I'm connected. The little Local Area Connection icon down in the lower right says I'm still connected at 100 mbps. But my browsers and whatnot don't seem to be getting the same info. The only thing that fixes it is restarting...

My second question is about security. There are TONs of security programs out there for firewall, antivirus, etc. Do any of you have any insight on what exactly I need? I was told that the windows firewall sucks. Right now I'm using a free 90 days of Windows Live OneCare. But I hate using something for ninety days and then having to get rid of it (because I'm too cheap to pay for one). The thing I like about the Live OneCare is that its an all-in-one deal, so I don't need 4 different security apps running all at once. As far as I can tell I need firewall, anti virus, anti spyware, and something for system maintenance...is that right?

I'm kind of new to PCs by the way, I'm learning but I've only had this thing for a year

Anyway, thanks

674795 2008-06-01 21:34:00 That seems to be common with a lot of people. Turn off all Power saving on everything to do with the connection.

You need:
1 3rd party firewall - Commodo or Zone Alarm
1 antivirus - NOD32 for a pay one or Avast for a free one
at least 2 antispyware programs - some free ones:
Spybot
Superantispyware
Spyware Doctor Starter Edition
Spyware Terminator

All in one suites maybe OK but I would definetly use additional anti-spyware as well, one will never find everything.

674796 2008-06-01 21:41:00 So I've got two questions:

But here's the thing, my computer still thinks I'm connected . The little Local Area Connection icon down in the lower right says I'm still connected at 100 mbps . But my browsers and whatnot don't seem to be getting the same info . The only thing that fixes it is restarting . . .

The LAN icon if its flashing, means its working within your network (or whoever you're connected to within the house) . It doesnt necessarily mean you're still connected to the internet .

That 100mbps is the speed within the house not what youre connected to (or at) while youre on the internet .

WHAT firewall is installed?? As, some firewalls can stop one of their services . And when it stops, so do you (you cant do anything on the internet)

Altho it doesnt sound like youre using a firewall, by your 2nd question

Theres a few, Some are in my sig below, and theyre free (Avast Home and Comodo firewall) . I wouldnt bother with Onecare . Depends if u want to pay for it . The 2 I've listed are free (ones a virus scanner and the other a firewall) . If you want to pay for it NOD32 .

You could post a hijackthis log, its in my sig, this will tell us if u have anything nasty (and it may tell us why you cant use the internet as in question 1)

674797 2008-06-01 22:31:00 I use Avast and comodo on all my machines at home we have 4 running most days gary67 (56)
674798 2008-06-02 03:52:00 Avast + Comodo Firewall 3 is a pretty much unbeatable and FREE! combo. beeswax34 (63)
674799 2008-06-02 04:20:00 I use the inbuilt vista firewall, mcafee 08, Spybot S&D, CCleaner and Ad-aware.
btw should I continue using the window vista firewall or should I use comodo pro? I would definitely use the comodo firewall instead of the XP firewall but not sure about the vista one.

674800 2008-06-02 05:25:00 No, definitely get Comodo. beeswax34 (63)
674801 2008-06-02 05:33:00 ok, thanks Blam (54)
674802 2008-06-02 14:21:00 OK Here's the log file...I'm amazed you can look at this gibberish and see what may be wrong ;)

Just scanning thru it I see references to applications I no longer have such as Sim City...

674803 2008-06-02 21:50:00 Get rid of / uninstall Onecare if it includes a firewall.

You should only have ONE firewall installed. Or else they'll conflict with each other.

Put hijackthis in its own folder run it tick these then tick fix checked

Close browsers
