674639 2008-06-01 09:28:00 I'm intending on changing my ISP from Telecom on the Go Large plan to either slingshot or telstraclear.

On the Go Large plan i get download speeds of maximum 30kBps, during peak times.

I want to know which one you would recommend and the average download and upload speeds and if they would be suitable for online gaming.

In case it helps i Live in urban New Plymouth, NZ.

The internet related questions i would like to know about are why does a speedtest say download is 3mbps which equivalates to 375kBps when it downloads at 30kBps? what are cable and dsl and adsl? can my router make my internet slow?

Thanks

674640 2008-06-01 09:31:00 DSL and ADSL are the same thing ADSL2+ is faster tho, that both of these.

Cable is different from ADSL and it uses a different modem

If you are thinking of moving from xtra to slingshot adsl, then I would reconsider, as that would be a step down in terms of service, and you could end up with slower internet speeds . The speed is dictated by the number of users connected to your exchange, and the distance you are away from the
exchange . Moving to another ADSL provider will not usually fix speed problems .

Xnet is one people recommend here, and although I say that there is nothing wrong with telecom, except they are more expensive, but at least they can't blame their adsl providers for problems, as the buck stops with them, as they are the adsl providers .

And they are the ones responsible for our sad broadband condition.
And they outsource everything.
And their helpdesk is staffed by halfwits following a script.

Xnet are at least helpful.

674643 2008-06-01 11:53:00 Well if you're getting 375kBps out of your connection with speedtest, then there's nothing wrong with it

It's probably whatever site you're downloading from that has the problem, and when you say during 'peak times' well then it's obvious, isn't it? not sure a different ISP would actually solve the problem...

I'm considering the Flood plan and 9gb monthly usage
