2008-06-01 04:04:00 | Somebody has lent me the above model which comes with bits of software, one of which is DV Studio 3.1E-SE. Is that the bit of software for transferring the moving video from the tape in the camera via the USB cable supplied, or is it just for taking single frame "snapshots" which is all that is happening at the moment? The "manuals" that come with the unit only suggest recording onto a standard video tape. S-Video and DV cables are "optional extras"! Thanks

Most cameras that use Tape will have a Firewire port for transferring Digital Video. Some have USB and Firewire where USB is used to transfer Photos and Firewire for Video. What sort of Tapes does it use? MiniDV or other? IF it is the GS5 then the DV port is on the right hand side, bottom front while looking through the viewfinder. (49 in the Manual) |

2008-06-01 22:39:00 | Thanks Speedy I did not bother looking anywhere other than Panasonic site, got a bit on here this morning. Well that one has DV-In-Out so yes a firewire cable. MiniDV tapes used also. Plug in the Firewire cable, turn on the camera to edit mode, computer should recognise the DV device, then run your software and capture. If your software does not work then you should also be able to pick it up with Windows Movie Maker.

2008-06-01 23:08:00 | Yup sounds like the DV cam I've got here . The software that came with it, was only for snapshots (the cam has a connection / cable you connect to a com port) . The software was pretty useless . I had to get a firewire card (The cam also has a firewire connection, and install XP) . Since Windows 2000 couldnt detect the cam, but XP can and installs the drivers for it . After that, I could use Moviemaker / whatever program to transfer the video via firewire .

2008-06-02 01:10:00 | Thanks for your input people - it was the NV-GS15 and your comments pretty much concur with what I've been thinking!! | tuiruru (12277) | |
2008-06-02 01:38:00 | Well all you need is a firewire card then you should be able to transfer video, using something like Moviemaker | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-06-03 05:20:00 | Hi Speedy Yep . Im actually doing this for a little old lady who has somehow acquired the camera for some studying shes involved with . Shes got a basic laptop running XP Home so the next problem could be whether SP 2 is installed . If necessary is it possible to get Movie Maker 2 just on its own? I was trying to make things as simple as possible so I naively thought that one of the free bits of software on the distribution CD ought to have taken care of the transfer . Also on the disc (apart from the usual lets make a tacky calendar and photo montage software) are a couple of, what look like last minute solutions for a) possible problems with the G . 726 Audio decoder and a patch from Bills boys in cases where playback of an MPEG 4 ends with an error message after 3 or 4 minutes . The manuals make scant reference of a Firewire cable so all in all theres quite a bit of prior knowledge required by little old ladies . Its analogous to somebody selling you a new car and telling you that you have to set up the carburettor and tappets yourself!! Having said that playing the tape back to the computer into WMM2 via the USB cable and driver works OK although the picture is a bit grainy/pixilated at the recommended resolution . Would a firewire cable improve that or the sped at all since, presumably, theyre governed by wots happening with the tape? Then, of course, theres the problem of where the end at the laptop goes . Guess Ill just have to bite the bullet and pay her a visit .

2008-06-03 06:14:00 | I have a firewire card that plugs into my laptop and the firewire cable I have I can use on either PC or Laptop, although I have several firewire cables laying around. All my PC's have built in firewire ports. MovieMaker 2 should be on the laptop if it has XP. Yes SP2 can be installed if it isn't already.
