674213 2008-05-31 05:23:00 Hi All,
When I plug in a USB device (portable hard drive) to my PC, I get a message saying “This device can perform faster. This device can perform faster if you connect it to a hi-speed USB 2.0 port. For a list of available ports, click here”
When I click here, I’m shows a list, with the heading “The hubs shown in bold type have free ports that can support the hi-speed USB device”.
In the list in bold it says “USB Root hub (4 ports), and if I click + to expand the list it shows all 4 ports as unused.
However, no matter which USB port I try, I still get the same message. There are 7 physical USB ports on my PC, I’ve tried them all, and each one gives the same message. I'm not using any USB expanders.

Is Windows telling me lies, that there are hi-speed USB2.0 ports free?? When I got the computer originally, all the ports were USB 1.0 (or 1.1, can’t remember) but a quite a few years back I’m sure I got an upgrade to put some USB 2.0 ports in. And that’s what it is telling me, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to recognise any as a USB 2.0 port.

I’m running Win XP Pro, Athlon 1400, 512MB RAM.

What else can I try and do to get it working at hi-speed? Copying files between the PC and portable drive takes forever!

674214 2008-05-31 05:29:00 Did you install SP1, 2, or 3??

Did you just format this system / hdd?? If you did, did you install the mobo / chipset drivers??

If the USB ports were originally 1.1 you CANT upgrade to 2.0. unless you buy a PCI USB 2 card, or buy a mobo thats got USB 2 onboard

If you cant remember installing a PCI card or updating the mobo, you wont have USB 2

674215 2008-05-31 06:08:00 Hi there,

I've got SP3. Upgraded it last week, although that is just a coincidence (hopefully!) as I've only just got the portable hard drive and this is the first time I've tried plugging it in.

Nope, I haven't just formatted the system or HDD.
I'm 95% sure that a new PCI USB 2.0 card was put in it.
I didn't do it myself, somone else did it for me, but I seem to remember that's what we had to do - buy a new card and put it in. Mind you, that's going backa few years.
That's why I'm confused the PC is not recognising any USB 2.0 ports now, as it should have some.

674216 2008-05-31 06:56:00 When you expand out the USB controllers are they showing as "Enhanced USB Controller" - if not then they are 1.0 or 1.1 , what is the make and model of your motherboard ? wainuitech (129)
674217 2008-05-31 08:00:00 Uninstall the USB stuff then reboot and let WIndows put it all back, your enhanced driver should then fix itself. pctek (84)
674218 2008-05-31 10:26:00 I've always had the same problem on an ASUS board.
yep shows as an enhanced host controller, it shows 1x USB 2.0 root hub and 3x USB root hub and I always get that damn message also.

674219 2008-05-31 10:36:00 pctek - I just tried your suggestion, and unfortunately I still seem to have the same issues.
Wainuitech - if I go to device manager and collapse out Universal serial bus controllers, on the list I have:
- Generic USB Hub
- USB MAss storage device
- USB printing support
- USB Root Hub (6 of them, all on seperate lines - can't collapse them)
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host companion controller (2 of them)
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host controller (3 of them)
- VIA USB enhanced Host controller

My motherboard is a ASUS a7v266...

Hi pctek
My front USB ports don't seem to work properly. I might try this to see if it works.

Everest says I have

USB1 Controller VIA VT83C572 PCI-USB Controller
USB1 Controller VIA VT83C572 PCI-USB Controller
USB1 Controller VIA VT83C572 PCI-USB Controller
USB1 Controller VIA VT83C572 PCI-USB Controller
USB2 Controller VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller
USB Device Acer Slim6 #2
USB Device USB Printing Support
How do I know which are the front USB ports please ? Also how do I uninstall "the USB stuff". Is doing this different than updating the drivers ?
