2005-10-20 23:03:00 | Hi all, What are people's experiences with FM transmitters for MP3 players like? I'm considering the iTrip, but would like to hear people's experiences of this, and other similar devices. Issues in particular such as strength of signal, clarity of sound, and practicality of the device. Your thoughts, comments, suggestions, welcomed. Cheers Lizard

2005-10-21 00:07:00 | dont you need an ipod to use itrip?? 100% correct. I have a 40Gb 4th Gen iPod. The iTrip is the prime candidate, custom made as it is for the iPod, but there are others out there and I'm curious as to which is best in terms of static interference, practicality, sound quality, etc. Lizard

2005-10-21 00:20:00 | I know 2 people who have an iPod + iTrip. One of them has had terrible experiences with the iTrip, to such an extent he has to literally lean the iTrip against the aerial of the radio to get clear reception. My other friend, on the other hand, can leave his iPod in one place, and walk around the house with a radio and pick up the signal clearly. Even walking around OUTSIDE the house the quality is still good. Me: Don't have an iPod, or FM transmitter, so can't comment based on personal experience.

Thanks somebody, That's pretty much the stuff I've been hearing - one person says it's great, another says it's rubbish. Are there any distinguishing points to differentiate your two friends' experiences - i.e. location, elevation, iPod generation, etc? Cheers lizard |

2005-10-21 04:05:00 | dont you need an ipod to use itrip?? actually not quite 100% true, the new Itrip uses the special port on the ipod, and thus will not work on another mp3 player, however the 1st gen iTrip uses no proprietary connectors and will work on any mp3 payer. i myself have a belkin tunecast which I have stashed in the ashtray of my car feeding from my mp3 player, it works brilliantly and is even powerful enough over that distance to jam out the weak radio station that is slightly present on the frequency I use.

2005-10-21 07:34:00 | I know 2 people who have an iPod + iTrip . One of them has had terrible experiences with the iTrip, My other friend, on the other hand, can leave his iPod in one place, and walk around the house with a radio and pick up the signal clearly . I have an iTrip and have tried in various ways and frequencies . Have also read about 110 very different experiences on the iPod site . I believe that you must have a fair modicum of patience . If you want to buy and have no worries whatsoever then do not buy . It is a learning experience . You must be willing to try different frequencies to find out the best to suit you . Also do you have a Japanese import, and if so do you have a band expander ? If you have a band expander then the frequency will be 10 . 00 different than the radio at home . I have had a fair bit of trouble tuning and learning . I recently sold my car which had a band expander and now have a car with a very narrow banded Japanese radio . Will buy a new one (no more band expanders for me !!) . Still it is all experience . Would I be without my iTrip - not bloody likely !! for all the problems I still love the experience of chosing what tunes and no ads ! Marvellous . Still I do hear that the tape you can put in connected with the iPod works well . May be worth checking out . Good luck . . . . . . . . and let us know what you decide . Misty

2005-10-21 09:19:00 | Jaycar and DSE sell FM transmitters that will work on a variety of players, not just mp3 ones. Why not go to Jaycar or DSE, buy an FM transmitter and before you leave the shop connect it to your iPod and see if you can hear it in a portable receiver (that you broght from home)? If it does not work, get a refund. | Strommer (42) | |
2005-10-21 10:08:00 | Steve got it in one..The little FM xmitters from Jaycar are excellent. Will work from the audioout 3.5mm socket of any player. Only about the size of an egg. Powered by 2 AAA cells. Use it for xmitting to the car FM radio, or any other receivers in the house. Seems to have a range of about 10 meters. It costs about $49, which I believe is cheaper than the itrip...... | Bazza (407) | |
