398211 2005-10-23 09:42:00 The fact remains that we don't know how much effort that Telecom is putting into improving the lot of their customers.
We do know that the bottom line comes first with all big business.

398212 2005-10-23 09:42:00 Yes. And if Telstra was the dominant supplier they'd suck too. It's the same with Microsoft. In fact, to the whingers in this country, the biggest company in any area sucks. it's extremely childish and tiresome. :groan:

we still have a monopoly controlling

Emphasis mine. if we get rid of telecom or introdce some form of competition that is realistic (Sad to say wireless isn't doing wonderfully well. It dosen't have as wider reach and is more expensive) and telecom will cease to suck. There dosen't have to be a dominant supplier

398213 2005-10-23 10:55:00 loosen your grip - rankings can be manufactured to display anything
I'm glad you agree with me.

398214 2005-10-23 18:16:00 They say all most the same thing over in Australia about Telstra :rolleyes:Very true, when i first connected to Telstra many years ago i told a ICQ friend in Oz what Telstra were charging in low population density Chch. She made the comment that it looks like Telstra Oz are subsidising Telstra NZ. With the high losses Telstra have been making here, it looks like she was right. personthingy (1670)
398215 2005-10-23 18:17:00 If the govt. hadn't given our telephone system to some Yank company we probably would not have broadband of any sort.
In fact we might not even have "dial up".

In fact we might not even have "dial up".I think that if we look back, we'll find that most of the "features" that were adopted by telecom shortly after its give away, such as the ability to screw people round with call waiting, were in the pipeline anyway.

Granted, the hopeless inefficiancy of anything run by government was holding telecom back, consider the subdivisions with one payphone and a long waiting list.
One must credit modern telecom with continuing to grow its network. I don't see Telstra or any other telco rushing in to wire new subdivisions, do you?

However, telecom is a monopoly by nature, and as such handing it to any one power in total provides absolute power, and that can only lead to one thing.

I firmly believe that telecom should have been contracted out, whoever can install the best fibre at the best price between 2 points gets that job, that sort of thing encourages better prices for the client while allowing the networks growth to match demand.

We can't change the past, so we will just have to live with it being what it now is.

Because of our size we don't have room for compitition reinventing the wheel all over the place, and my own telcos huge consistant losses are a testamony to what happens when someone trys this expererment.

However, some compitition has thrived. Consider the households with no landline but everyone in it has a vodafone. Wireless internet has HUGE potentual, but people don't adopt it for the same reason that so many connect via xtra - because they don't bother to realise that the internet isn't owned or solely provided by telecom, people don't look further than their own phone bill.

The only reason that xtra wasn't my first ISP is that they took 2 weeks to send the floppy disks out. After the first week i got annoyed, rung IHUG and got a proper ISP on board. When i was as green as, i simply didn't look at the options, untill the most obvious option (ringing up my telco of the time) proved to be a bad move before i was even connected. Telecom have since learnt that if they get the net up and running for the customer quickly, the compitition wont be even considered in many cases. They know that they can provide a crap service, but most comsumers will put up with it as the consumers know no better. So long as it "goes", the consumer is likely to stay with the telcos own ISP.

398217 2005-10-23 19:09:00 Does anyone know if we as a country still have significant shares in telecom? personthingy (1670)
398218 2005-10-24 08:51:00 Well Personthingy and Pctek, you have valiantly provided some commonsense. And DangerousDave provided a great graphic for a bit of reality. Moaning about Telecom/Microsoft/George Bush etc etc is an international sport where the players indulge ankledeep world views.

I honestly cannot see what all the fuss is about. Actual business use of broadband is trouble free. For a few purposes what Telecom provide is slow, but so are our hospital services compared with, say, New York or London. We are a very small country.

NZ business is mainly concerned with trucking stuff from A to B - freezing works to ship, timber to building site. The internet is irrelevant. Oh yes, it might be nice to stream video of the meat being loaded on the ship but that doesn't really add any value. Its just playing with toys.

Which I gotta say, is what the Net is mostly used for. :2cents:

398219 2005-10-24 09:04:00 Not quite true, i know of a couple of projects that went to Aussie simply because of our upload speed, this was in relation to graphic intensive work that was being done for International clients, The large files had to be shipped back and forth in real time for approval/adjustment.

Our speeeds are artificially restricted by Telecom purely so they can charge more, and they have recently ( i think, could be wrong) had a slap on the wrist for charging more for business customers then for home use.Thats just simple rorting.

And even in my fathers bizzo we can see a great advantage for video confering, and passing back and forth large emails, plans, paperwork etc etc. This is due to having a centreal office but nearly all work sites being dotted around the country. If it can be done quickly then its all good, If not then your better off driving for 3 hours and doing it face to face and with a fax machine in the room......

At the moment they are all in the process of moving to Vodaphone as the features of the Telecom 3G network are utter bolluks....But then, I did tell them that Telecom would artifically restrict that as well.Thousands paid out on phones that are now worthless.

Anyhow, Its not just people that are leaving this country in droves.....

398220 2005-10-24 21:51:00 Thanks for that Met,good to see someone give a objective explanation on how Telecom are holding things back-to those who would sit on their hands and let Telecom do with us what they like. Cicero (40)
