2005-10-22 16:46:00 | Let's look an example. In this example, we shall use Telewest, a large british company (http://www.telewest.co.uk) On Orcon Bitstream with Orcon tolls, it costs $30 a month. It has 256k/128k d/u, and a 1gb data cap On Telewest cable, it costs $30NZ a month. It has 512k u/d with no data cap Now, which of the two countries is going to be near the bottom of the OCED ranking table? You see what I mean? Make broadband cheaper and more people will get it. That's what the article is about. Telecom have such horribly expensive services that noone is buying it, and down in the OCED ratings we go It would appear that you're missing the point here. In your example the 10 pound plan requires that you have a phone line with Telewest. This will cost 10 pounds 50 and you will pay for all non weekend calls. That's as much as 10p for a minute during the day. A poor comparison.

2005-10-22 18:56:00 | Calling people living outside of NZ I get --1 phone line with free local calling --1 cable TV connection to keep my flatmate ammused. --1 cable modem running at up tp 2 Mb/sec with a 5 GB/month (internaional) cap. I'm paying $130/month NZ$ which equates to about $90 American or 75 Euro How much would you pay for something similar? I'm just curious how much more expensive we actually are.

2005-10-22 19:10:00 | You still aren't getting it. Why don't people want broadband? It is too expensive. Why is it too expensive? Because Telecom operate internet. The point in this is telecom are trying to stifle the market LTelecom have such horribly expensive services that noone is buying it, and down in the OCED ratings we go I get your point. You don't get mine. See personthingys comment about her mother. And now you say no-ones buying it? Not no-one. And as for Telecom the evil monster keeping us all from affording it. This has all been said before. So its a Telecom bashing thread now. Perhaps you should go to that other website that was mentioned a while ago. The big difference is as personthingy says, we are a small population long mountainous country. Its expensive to upgrade the infrastructure. There isn't enough population to recover their costs in anything other than the long term. And ther is nothing stopping other companies from pitching in, but they just want to sit back, whinge about Telecom and reap the profits without having to do anything.

I think telsra plans a very good value for money, I couldn't find a cheaper deal anywhere else. except back telstra |

2005-10-22 20:00:00 | I think the goverment should buy Telecom back, employ most of NZ like they used to,then give all of us broadband. ;) | Cicero (40) | |
