399163 2005-10-26 03:44:00 Hi Plod,
My brother had a plasma TV well 2 actually. He has since gone back to what he had before.Technology isn't that good on them yet but it will get better. It was the burning in time of the little tubes that caused him grief, loss of picture quality & also they are heat sensitive.

399164 2005-10-26 04:39:00 My boss who has been servicing CRT screens since about 1980s still reckons you can't beat a CRT screen. Plasma screens get very hot and have noisey fans to keep them cool.

399165 2005-10-26 05:51:00 I remember reading that the CRT people were going to squash them up,that is,make them considerably narrower. so as to keep a leg in with LCD etc,but have not seen anything since. Cicero (40)
399166 2005-10-26 07:27:00 At the prices, I would say neither are worth even considering.
In my case I watch the evening news and some sports and that's it.
Why anyone would want to spend large sums of money to watch advertising beats me.

I like the look of the new TVs - except for all those nasty pixels.
I agree with JJJJJ to a certain extent.
Until we have widescreen digital broadcasts (free to air) and HDTV, they are a trifle pricey.
Great for watching DVDs (and soon HD-DVDs). Not bad if you fork out for Sky (minus the HDTV bit whcih doesnt exist yet).
And generally nice to look at all round.

Thin CRTs are supposed to be on the market soon (from Samsung I think).
An article I read predicted their price would be comparable to the current crop of high-quality crts. Wait and see I guess.

399167 2005-10-26 07:35:00 The Sony Solutions showroom in Auckland have a 50" 3LCD Grand Wega (several of them) going for $3,500 incl GST each. Normal retail is $6,000 on these.

I am negotiating the purchase of 2 and already have a decent discount on top of the $3,500 each. If you're serious about it, you should PM me to see whether they will go lower with 3 bought.

Anyway, the TV's themselves are brand new and the 2005 model.

399168 2005-10-26 08:58:00 Our family uses a LCD, 32' Sharp.

LCD if you plan to use it for lots of fixed images. Connecting to a computer, etc. Not plasma defintely, cause LCD don't have a "burn out" problem, whereas Plasma does...

Plasma if all you're going is for size, and contrast. Bigger plasmas are cheaper than same sized LCDs....

Main thing to consider when buying a flat screen, is NOT the picture quality though. Prices are now are about right IMO (look for sales), but the catch is the warranty. Make sure that it's a good 2-3 yr warranty. Cause fixing one is real expensive.

I'm not too sure about those they sell in Foodtown and such, I think it's less than $3000 for a 32' LCD, so that's all right....

399169 2005-10-26 09:59:00 I've just been reading about SED monitors (www.behardware.com)

Very cool. Maybe this technology will replace both plasma and LCD. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

399170 2005-10-26 20:25:00 Another thing with LCD, I'm not to sure if this affects Plazma's is that because each pixel on a LCD is a little light source on darks scences when wathing a movie etc the screen well show up white as if you have had the contrast turned up to high.
