398259 2005-10-24 22:46:00 i want it for when i go to Uni next year (waikato )
I'm staying in a Hall of Res, and tehy don't have telefone connections in teh room.
So if i want ADSL, i have to pay a few hundred for connection fee (to get it in my room) then $40 a mnth line rental + internet charges....
thats y i was keen for wirelessI'm not sure the reports about latency are accurate anymore, woosh recenty did a network upgrade to allow decent VoIP, which is very latency dependant, so that may be an old problem. I would see if someone who is actually using it currently comments.

I am always frustrated by woosh's lack of coverage maps and I am confused by the lack of coverage in hamilton by woosh. as I know of a couple of sites here that run 802.11b links via woosh that were established back in the day when woosh were walker wireless. But they don't seem keen on the idea of new connections here.

Personally I would wait and see with what can be done at the halls. When I was at uni, some years ago now, that I looked at a PC in Studville (student village, a hall of res at waikato). back then there was a hallwide network running with everything MP3s, illegal software, and porn on it mostly (Not movies, this was *some* time ago). Surely by now with the possiblity of wireless and so forth, the whole of the halls should be bridged into one big network, with *something* decent at the edge for internet access. Possibly sharing the costs among the entire user base in the halls.

398260 2005-10-25 04:37:00 mind you i was talking about rural southland, the places that are really in the sticks....it maybe completely different in a town situtation, woosh may not be that bad. Prescott (11)

Waikato uni is running one of the larger wireless research networks:
www.wand.net.nz/ http: so they're bound to have something to suit. When I was on campus for the last NZNOG there were a few wireless networks about, it's just a matter of asking nicely.

Failing that, get friendly with someone in the upper levels of the hostels where the rooms are wired - setup an AP with a captive portal and away you go.
