398181 2005-10-22 06:29:00 The poorest person i know (apart from idiots with expensive habits) just got an IHUG blink connection, she can barely afford it, but none the less, she's scraped up the cash to upgrade from dial up to a $50 ADSLrouter c/- IHUG....

If the net is a priority in your life, then broadband can be got.
If it's not then what's the problem?

As a country, we are disadvantaged with the cost of communications, mainly because of isolation and ruggard terrain, but we make up for it with the wonderful mountainous land we are lucky enough to be able to share. (Look out your window, not just the PC screen)

If our wonderful isolated and mountainous country isn't good enough, i suggest people move to some overpopulated flat land where you can't move for the everintrusive presence of human maggots BUT, you'll be enjoying fast internet for a few dollars less!

Moan moan, moan-moan-moan. Aaarrrrgggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

398182 2005-10-22 06:37:00 O yeah..

I agree with pctek.

Some people should stick to dial up. It better for their situation. My dear mother uses dial up. She moved so many times in the last year i have lost count. She's now bought land, will get a phone line soon, but may still travel. Now for her, its better to just plug into a phone line when she needs, and even then its just to pick up email and stuff. Now what would be the point of her getting broadband?

When i finally move into my truck, i may go back to dial up myself, unless anyone can advise the best ADSL connection for a mobile home? :p

398183 2005-10-22 06:40:00 $29.95 is not exactly expensive. I have come across quite a few people on dial up who aren't interested. All depends on what your usage of its for.
So stuff your point.

You still aren't getting it. Why don't people want broadband? It is too expensive. Why is it too expensive? Because Telecom operate internet. The point in this is telecom are trying to stifle the market

Let's look an example. In this example, we shall use Telewest, a large british company (http://www.telewest.co.uk)

On Orcon Bitstream with Orcon tolls, it costs $30 a month. It has 256k/128k d/u, and a 1gb data cap

On Telewest cable, it costs $30NZ a month. It has 512k u/d with no data cap

Now, which of the two countries is going to be near the bottom of the OCED ranking table?

You see what I mean? Make broadband cheaper and more people will get it. That's what the article is about. Telecom have such horribly expensive services that noone is buying it, and down in the OCED ratings we go

but we make up for it with the wonderful mountainous land we are lucky enough to be able to share. (Look out your window, not just the PC screen)

That's lovely and all, but some pretty mountains won't convince buisnesses to come back because of lack of broadband. Who cares if we have a current account in negative figures because large buisnesses aren't investing here, we can always gaze at mount cook. Hoorah!

Hoorah! So as a country we are spending to much on imported bling.. o well, nevermind... Lets blame telecom!

Personally i'd rather stay here and try to live within my means.

believe or not but some people just use the internet to pay bills, banking and checking the odd email, it wouldn't matter how cheap it is they just don't need it.
I know a couple of people that don't even have internet access at home, they manage to do or their downloading and surfing while at work.
As for myself, I pay what ever price it costs me to have, yes it is a luxury bur if you want it you get it.You can ***** and moan all you like about the cost of it but its not going to change anything, a bit like the cost of petrol, don't use my car any less, if you want it you pay for it.

398186 2005-10-22 07:15:00 OK, i'm going to concede, i might be missing something, but who other than a data center is going to want to have the kind of internet connection thats going to be a significant part of the overall administration cost equation anyway?

Gets flameproof suit on while awaiting your kind replys

398187 2005-10-22 07:15:00 If I hear one more example of person x living in asian country y saying they get 3e8mb internet access for $0.00 there will be trouble...

Adding to this: (www.orcon.net.nz) will show why we really don't need faster internet access/more internet access.
