398093 2005-10-21 06:29:00 I did not see the TV item but heard an interview with someone on National Radio. I missed the first part so don't know who the person being interviewed was.
What he did say is that watching TV does NOT exercise the brain so the kids neurons and things don't learn anything while watching TV. So they don't get to develop brain ability. I suppose he means the comics and things which do not require any great brain activity and in another interview by a professor of neurological matters she said that if you don't use your brain you will lose it.
IMHO you don't need an academic degree to prove the link between violence in society and the kind of stuff we are being fed on TV. I am not a prude and can swear with the best of them if I drop a rock on my big toe, but I find the indiscrimiate use of the F word as though it were a comma in normal conversation , not only repulsive but indicates to me what kind of a moron the person is.

398094 2005-10-21 07:40:00 Well it comes to mind this song I use to sing in my class when I'm 10..."Too much TV Bad for Childrens' Brains...Video take it back...back to the shop!..."

So this thing is not new.
Since the dawn of games...Sega...PC, PS1, PS2, PSP, XBox etc...I don't think there is anything bad in these...It just comes to supervision...A parent should supervise what kids are playing, watching, browsing...Don't blame the video games etc...

398095 2005-10-21 09:53:00 I heard some of the interview too. The chap was saying studies show non-tv households have a lower level of violence. The children are calmer. When TV is introduced into homes, about 9 months later violence at school, bullying etc increased sharply.

Some of the studies were done in South Africa which is still a 3rd world nation in many ways. Kind of hard to find communities where TV isn't already entrenched.

Studies of infants showed significant brain activity when they tried simple problems. Answering questions, playing with blocks. That brain activity faded and disappeared when the same infants watched TV.

Rather a shocking finding that TV could potentially cause so much damage - including a propensity for violence. Attention span was another problem. Sesame Street used to have 6 minute stories, but now uses 3 minutes. Children are learning that the real world appears to be in slow-motion and cannot concentrate.

Food for thought.

398096 2005-10-21 18:20:00 Well its my opinion that "studies" like this can be made to show whatever you like .
Like interpreting the bible . . .

Now what if someone did a "study" showing the relationship of cars and violence and dumb kids? Bet that could come out the same too .
And one other mention was made on the program that it was shown that low economic homes give the same effect .
Now thats typical . Only poor people are criminals . As we all know . . :groan:

Years ago it was comics and SF pulps responsible for all this stuff . In the future it will be whatever entertainment thing they have then .

I've just finished F . E . A . R, can't say I feel any sudden desire to rush out and commit a crime now . My son has been playing games since he was 7 . He has turned into some psycho criminal . He was very bright at school too .
He watched TV too - he learnt his letters and things off Sesame St before he went to kindy . He was very bright at school too . So its not all bad .

398098 2005-10-21 21:41:00 The radionz web site now has a lot of their programmes available in audio.
The interview about TV dangers was on Tuesday 18th on Nine to Noon. You can listen it on the web site.

That is fair comment and we need to be wary of "everything new is bad for us" . But to my mind, it is commonsense that watching TV or a computer screen prevents a person from engaging in physical activity . That leads to obesity, unfitness, blood circulation problems, GI tract disfunction - all slow long term bad stuff .

Of course the problem with such arguments is that we tend to exaggerate . The lean mean fit sports kid on the one hand and the fat slobby nerd on the other . Hopefully kids and adults spend only a few hours/week at the most sitting and watching .

398101 2005-10-22 06:46:00 Meh, nothing good on tv anyway so there's no cause for convcern re kids watching it all day :illogical Edward (31)
