675690 2008-06-04 23:50:00 I'm about to order a new PC and would like a bit of info.

Is there any reason why I should not use a 1333 MHz cpu in a 1600 MHz motherboard?

Can I use 1000+ memory in a motherboard rated at 1200 MHz?.

I am looking at a quad core QX9650 cpu . An Asus Rampage Formula M/B and GSKILL F2- 8500CL 5D DDR2 1066 memory. Any comments?

And 3 Raptor hard disks and 1200W Silverstone PSU.

Asus EN9800GX2 TOP/G/2DI/1G Video Card, GeForce 9800 GX2, 1024MB. Maybe 2 of them in SLI.

Would appreciate any comments

675691 2008-06-05 00:13:00 That all sounds fine to me. Did you win Lotto?

Although the board looks OK maybe consider one that takes DDR3-1333 or better Memory.
Memory now is at DDR3-1333/1600/1800/2000

My favourite boards are ASUS and Gigabyte, I have some of each here. X38 but Gigabyte now also do the X48 - Eg Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 1600MHz FSB, 4xDIMM DDR3

He's lucky enough to be able to do this all the time. (jealous)

Is there any reason why I should not use a 1333 MHz cpu in a 1600 MHz motherboard? Some CPUs with 1333 MHz on my vendors sites clearly state -
*NOTE...This will not clock back to 1066MHz

looking at the QX9650 - that warning is not there. The best thing to do is look at the motherboard manufactures web site, locate your board and there will be a list of CPU's that do work with the Board.

675695 2008-06-05 00:46:00 If you wish to go the SLI route you will need an nVidia motherboard. If you're going really high end (which you clearly seem to be) consider the new 790Ultra boards hazza87 (12499)

Good catch...however, I would wait a month for the GT200 series to be released. Any dual GPU solution will have issues with some games...

He won't care - its all for MSFSX.
And he can upgrade cards again later.................;)

JJJJJ I would 100% hold off another month, ATI are probably releasing there new gen cards this month (4800 series) and Nvidia next month . A GTX280 will likely beat a 9800GX2 (rumor but likely) .

Its your decision, but I know your current PC is a decent rig and the short wait may be worth it, its a bad time to buy right before a new gen .
