675533 2008-06-04 11:05:00 I tried transferring files from my Vista Ultimate pc 7200rpm HD (wired to router) to my XP Laptop 5400rpm HD (wireless to router), the router is 10/100 a/b/g and got no more than 1.5mbs transfer rate. That's pretty slow.
So I thought I'll connect the laptop to the router with an ethernet cable so both machines are cabled. Now the best transfer rate I get is 1.1mbs!!!!:badpc:

I googled this issue and can see heaps of people have this Xp to Vista issue but I can't find a fix. I'd be happy with 10mbs but 1.1mbs is frickin ridiculous!

675534 2008-06-04 11:09:00 The 5400 rpm that the laptop has got isnt exactly fast

That may not help things.

675535 2008-06-04 21:31:00 Do you have SP1 installed for Vista? That fixed/helped a lot of file copying issues.

The 5400RPM HDD will not affect thing like that, unless you are trying to run Vista on 512MB RAM or something silly, in which case the HDD will be getting raped, because it's functioning as a data storage medium as well as RAM.

675536 2008-06-04 22:15:00 Yep, SP1 is supposed to fix most of the file transferring issues with Vista.

5400rpm drive should still get a lot more than 1.5mbs.

675537 2008-06-05 03:01:00 windows reports transfer speeds in bytes, routers are stated in bits. This being the case it may be that 1.5 x 8 = 12mb/s just a thought. Tis about equal to what I get through usb 2 though - slow as.

Still really slow though, an "average" 7200 rpm drive usually gets about 40-50 mb/s on test I dont know about the laptop drives but I'd have expected more than 20.

still unless you are working at 10baseT ethernet should def be faster than wireless. Bear in mind you will never achieve the full speed of the connection due to overheads.
