It has been a long time since I have tried to connect my laptop to a broadband/local area connection. I'm always on wireless. Anyways, I was trying to connect to a cable modem and I can't get it to work. It didn't even recognize that I was putting a chord into the computer. I went to Network Connections, tried to create a new connection...and what I ended up with was:

"Local Area Connection 2"
Limited or No connectivity
Microsoft Loopback Adapter

I think I did something wrong. I don't remember what my old connection for broadband was called, but I don't remember it being Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

So, I tried a separate PC at a different house. That didn't work either.

I tried to create a new connection following these steps. 1) "Connect to the Internet", 2) "Set up my connection manually", 3) "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on....then it tells me "Your broadband connection should already be configured and ready to use."

I ran ipconfig/all and it says my autoconfigured IP address is 169.254.25.129....shouldn't it be something like 192.168.0.**?

I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What else is in network connections? Whats / where's Local Area connection?

675505 2008-06-04 10:12:00 Is the network adapter enabled? If unused, it is frequently turned off in laptops to save power.

675506 2008-06-04 10:13:00 There is no "Local Area Connection"...how do I create it?

There is... "Wireless Network Connection" and a VPN for my school. Only thing else is the Local Area Connection 2, which is the microsoft loopback thing.

I don't see "network adapter."

I have "Device Manager", "Drivers" (with buttons for Driver Signing and Windows Update), and I have "Hardware profiles."

If there's no network adapter (or entry under this), in device manager

Under device manager it only has "Intel Pro/wireles . . . " and "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" under Network Adapters .

675510 2008-06-06 04:05:00 Quick check - you're not accidentally plugging it into a modem slot are you? (I've done that a few times) .

Have a look in device manager and see if you can find reference to a network adapter . If it doesn't show up that would be the problem - you may either not have an adapter installed, or the driver may not be installed .
