675122 2008-06-02 23:56:00 After many years of faithful service my old Canon BJC 2000sp printer has died .

Yep, the Print Head has cooked and a new one costs $80 so I figure it might be time to look at a later model printer . I don’t need a commercial printer as I would only print a couple of reams a year, mainly text in black & white .

Hence I’m looking for recommendations .

I want something that is good value for money, can print a good standard of colour, for the odd time I use colour and doesn’t run the most expensive cartridges on the market . To this end I’d like one that has individual cartridges so I can fill my own .

Yes I know a lot of people are against filling their own cartridges but I’ve been doing it for over 10 years using the Calidad Ink supplied for the specific printer and never had one problem .

So what’s the consensus of opinion? :D

675123 2008-06-02 23:59:00 Do you want a printer by itself?

Or a printer, that includes a scanner / fax / copier?? As in an MFC?

675124 2008-06-03 00:15:00 Primarily a Printer Speedy, but if it comes with extras that don’t cost the earth that’s fine.

I understand some of the combination types can be troublesome?

675126 2008-06-03 00:38:00 Canon.

The first one Trev recommended is good, I'd recommend going for a MP500 series one, the 500+ models go through less ink, and will be cheaper in the long run. Very nice printers too.

I haven't seen any more issues with MF printers than straight Inkjet. Not that there are many issues with any printers anymore, apart from people dropping stuff in them! :p

Best ones recently have been un-popped popcorn, a dead fly, a whole pencil, a leaf and a drawing pin.

So as long as you use genuine consumables and don't drop stuff in it, it will be fine! :)

675127 2008-06-03 03:34:00 yeppers.

I have a MP510 canon scanner, printer, copier. And it works well. Print very nice colour prints and reasonably quick for coping b&w.

We haven't had any problems with it.

Cheers,

Vic.

675130 2008-06-03 08:20:00 Depends on what you want - I have a Canon Pixma iP8500 for printing photos, and a old Canon S750 (only prints B&W these days) for general printing of things I want to read.

I use (particularly in the iP8500) Canon ink - I'm after good production here and I get it. I also use Canon paper (and have a couple of Canon digi cameras). :clap

675131 2008-06-03 09:27:00 I have a HP Photosmart C3180 that we got for around $100. Its a MFC with printer, scanner and copier.

Very fast and economical to run and excellent software (albeit bloated)
