674970 2008-06-02 08:27:00 I'm trying to set up a local network behind my Telstra Clear connection, but I'm having an unusual problem. I'm using a Belkin F5D9230-4 router, and the standard Motorola SB5101 cable modem.

I configure the router by entering my ip adress etc, and the router successfully connects. However, the connection drops for a few seconds every 23 seconds. (I can tell this from the connection log, and it's every 23 seconds without fail) It's totally bizarre. It reconnects itself immediately, but this is hell for gaming.

My local network is fine, it's the connection from the router to the net. This can be determined because even with no computers connected to the router the 'internet light' still drops out every 23 seconds.

Just playing round I turned off NAT and used the router as a gateway (I think, I'm not sure of the terminology), and this worked fine. But it's not much use if I want to use my laptop too.

I've tried cloning my computer MAC address to see if it's some sort of filtering by telstraclear, but this had no effect. I've also called telstraclear and they say they don't have a problem with setting up a local network.

I'm out of ideas, :badpc: can anyone help?

cheers, shermo

674971 2008-06-02 09:37:00 I have a Belkin F5D 5630au 4 router. Have you looked in the router settings under the Wan/ATM PVC and select the connection you are on and under Connect type make sure it is selected to Always Connected. I had this problem when I first got this router and it took me a while to figure out why it was disconnecting but not every 23 seconds but about every 15 mins if it detected no internect activity. Your settings may be similar.

674972 2008-06-02 10:58:00 The 9230 seems to a lot lighter on the config options. I don't have anything along those lines as far as I can see.

A friend suggested it might be to do with the surfboard modem trying to act as a router. I'm not quite sure what that means, but I went to the surfboard config page, and indeed the "DHCP Server Enabled" box is ticked.

I should mention that I tried to use an older wired router to do this a while ago and ran into a similar problem. It was a sitecom, and IIRC it wasn't disconnecting as frequently, but when it did it happened for much longer.

674973 2008-06-02 11:21:00 Can you check on something - it may be the Tech that installed the Telstra Broadband didn't set it correctly.

go to your browser, in the address type in 192.168.100.1 Press enter, look at the Signal Tab - the readings you are wanting Should be close to these in this picture (http:) Especially the signal to Noise ratio & Power Level - just had to get mine reset by telstra a week or so back when it was cutting out all the time, - router is fine.

What are your reading?

Hmm... my power level is around 1.4-1.7, and speeds are generally ok... what sort of speeds are you getting wainuitech?

674975 2008-06-02 12:00:00 1.0 to 1.3 dBmV Power level

36.2 dB S2N ratio

The guy did set it up on a sunday, so I can't say I blame him too much if it's dodgy :)

After doing some googling this was the closest I could get to my problem. It seems to be the same problem I have, but it's happening every hour rather than every few seconds. The solutions/causes suggested were:

- Upgrade firmware
- Bad signal
- Lease time

I contacted telstraclear directly, and asked them what sort of results for signal to noise and power I should get. I also asked about the lease time.

They guy knew less than I did, which is saying a lot. But I'm getting called back tomorrow by someone more competent.

So my question is, what sort of questions should I ask him to get some progress on this? Bearing in mind that TC doesn't give support for home networks! So I have to be a little bit sneaky.

Thanks for any input

674977 2008-06-04 09:47:00 If you can rule out your wireless router, then they are generally helpful as it will be a modem or line issue. Plug your PC directly into the cable modem, and configure it appropriately, and see if you still get dropouts.

In my experience, they tend to do some basic diagnostics at their end, and if they can't find anything wrong, they offer to send out a technician to have a look. Just explain everything you've done so far, answer any of their questions, and ask if they can send someone around to check the line/modem.

674978 2008-06-04 10:45:00 Well, that's the thing - it works completely fine when I'm connected directly to the surfboard modem. It also works completely fine when I'm using the wireless router as a gateway (not sure that's the right term, but just going straight through the router without trying to assign local IPs.) shermo (12739)
674979 2008-06-04 21:13:00 Then it seems like it's the fault of the router, or a particular setting on the router, rather than a Telstraclear problem. somebody (208)
